In the Beginning God Created
Month 3: Creation & Science · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: Genesis 1:1-13
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. 6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate the waters from the waters.” 7 So God made the expanse and separated the waters beneath it from the waters above. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. 9 And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land may appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land “earth,” and the gathering of waters He called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind.” And it was so. 12 The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Titus 1-3
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Paul tells Titus how God's people should live good lives that match the truth.)The Heart of It
The very first sentence of the Bible answers the very biggest question anyone can ask. Where did everything come from? Genesis doesn't begin with a long argument. It doesn't begin with a science lecture. It begins with a Person who was already there. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." There was no light yet. No oceans. No stars. No you. There was just God, full and happy in Himself. And then He began to speak. "Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light." He didn't build the world out of leftover stuff lying around. He called it into being out of nothing, just by His powerful word. On day one He made light. On day two He spread out the sky. On day three He gathered the seas, raised the dry land, and covered it with green plants bursting with seeds. After each step the Bible says, "God saw that it was good."
This matters more than it might seem. What if the universe made itself by accident? Then nothing would really mean anything. You would just be a happy mistake floating through space. But tells us the truth. Everything came from a wise, good, powerful God who chose to create. That means the world is not random. It is on purpose. The sunrise, the apple seed, the wave on the shore. None of it is leftover chance. It is the careful, joyful work of a Maker who was there first. He looks at His work and calls it "good." When your child looks up at the night sky, they are looking at something Someone made on purpose.
Around the Table
Before there was anything at all, there was God. And He made the whole world by just talking! "Let there be light!" And POOF, there was light.
Let's do it: Turn off the lights. Then flip them on and shout, "Let there be light!" Talk about how God made real light that very same way.
God didn't use any old stuff to make the world. He made everything out of nothing, just by speaking. That shows us how powerful He really is.
Let's talk: If God made everything that exists, who does the whole world belong to?
makes a bold claim. The universe had a beginning, and it had a Beginner. Even many scientists agree the universe is not eternal. It started. The big question is who started it.
Let's go deeper: Why does it matter for how you live whether the universe was made on purpose or by accident?
💬 Conversation Starter
If you could speak one brand-new thing into existence with just your words, what would you make?— God did exactly that. And everything He spoke was good!
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Something cannot come from nothing all by itself. Everything that begins to exist needs a cause. The universe began to exist. So it had a Cause big enough and wise enough to make it. That Cause is God (). Share that calmly and kindly. Never share it as a put-down ().

is not just the start of a story. It is the foundation under your family's whole worldview. If God is Creator, then He owns everything and defines everything. He gets the final word on what is true and good, and that includes over your home. A child who is taught from the start that "in the beginning God created" has a fixed anchor. That anchor holds when the culture later insists everything is an accident with no meaning. Lead here with confidence, not nervousness. You are not handing your kids a fragile theory. You are handing them the most reasonable account of reality there is. And settle it in your own heart first. You, too, are a creature made on purpose by a good Maker. You are not a self-made man who must hold the universe together by willpower.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that before anything existed, You were already there. You are full of life and goodness. Thank You for making the heavens, the earth, and our family on purpose. Help us see Your handiwork everywhere. Help us trust Your good Word. In Jesus' name, amen."
Before there was anything, there was God. And everything He made, He made on purpose.
