Today's reading: Hebrews 8-10
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice opens a new and living way to God, better than any old offering.)The Heart of It
Right at the dawn of creation, before the first word of light, we get a glimpse of the Holy Spirit. "The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters" (). The whole Trinity was at work in creation. The Father planned it. The Son spoke it (). And the Spirit was right there, hovering. That word "hovering" pictures something tender and careful. It is like a mother bird brooding over her nest, ready to bring life. The Spirit who would later raise Jesus from the dead was present at the very start. He hovered over a dark and empty world, ready to fill it with order, beauty, and life. Job said it simply: "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life" ().
Here is the wonderful connection for us today. The same Holy Spirit who hovered over the dark waters and brought a whole world to life is the Spirit who lives inside everyone who belongs to Jesus. Sometimes your heart feels dark, empty, or "without form." It feels messy and unsure. The Spirit loves to hover there too, bringing order, peace, and new life. He is a Person. He is God Himself. He is not a force or a feeling. To "walk in the Spirit" means to live each day close to Him. We ask His help. We listen for His nudges. We let Him grow good things in us, like love, joy, and peace (). The Creator-Spirit is also the Helper-Spirit, and He wants to make something beautiful out of your life.
Around the Table
At the very beginning, the world was dark and empty. But God's Holy Spirit was right there, like a mother bird keeping her eggs warm, ready to bring life!
Let's do it: Cup your hands gently over an imaginary little nest. That's a picture of how the Spirit hovered over the world, full of care.
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit were all part of creation. The same Spirit who brought the world to life lives in us when we belong to Jesus.
Let's talk: When your heart feels "dark and empty," how could it help to remember that the Spirit loves to bring light and life?
shows the Spirit's creative power at the very start. The same Spirit later raised Jesus, and now He lives inside everyone who belongs to God. And Jesus invites us to be filled with Him for power and witness.
Let's go deeper: What is the difference between trying to be good by your own willpower and letting the Spirit grow His fruit in you?

Have you ever watched a bird sit so carefully on its nest? How does that picture help you imagine the Holy Spirit caring for the world, and for you?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some say the Holy Spirit is just an impersonal "force." But from Genesis onward, the Spirit acts like a Person. He hovers. He creates. He gives life. He teaches. He can even be grieved (). You can gently point out that a force doesn't care, but the Spirit does ().
For Dad · Go Deeper
is a quiet but rich text for raising Spirit-filled children. It teaches them that the Holy Spirit is not a strange add-on to the Christian life. He was present and powerful from the first verse of the story. He is the same God, fully personal and fully creative. In the classic Pentecostal understanding, the Spirit who brooded over the waters is the same Spirit who fell at Pentecost and is poured out today for empowered witness and Christlike fruit. But remember the guardrail. The aim is never spectacle or hype. The aim is character. The Spirit's first work is to make us more like Jesus. You cannot lead your children into a Spirit-filled life you are not living. So ask honestly tonight: am I depending on the Creator-Spirit's power, or just my own willpower? Then ask the Father to fill you again ().

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that Your Spirit hovered over the dark waters and filled the world with life. Send that same Spirit to hover over the empty places in our hearts. Fill us. Lead us. Grow Your good fruit in us. Help us walk close to You all day. In Jesus' name, amen."
The Spirit who brought the world to life lives in me. And He loves to bring light to my dark places.
