Six Days and God Rested
Month 3: Creation & Science · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: Genesis 1:14–2:3
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years. 15 And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And He made the stars as well. 17 God set these lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth, 18 to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. 20 And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters teemed according to their kinds, and every winged bird after its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. 24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God looked upon all that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. … 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
Memory Verse
“For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.”— Exodus 20:11 (BSB)memorize this week
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: 1 Peter 1-5
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Peter writes to scattered believers: you are "living stones," chosen and held by God.)The Heart of It
Read carefully and you'll notice something. God built His world like a master craftsman following a plan. On days one through three He shaped the empty spaces. He made light and dark, sky and sea, and dry land. Then on days four through six He filled those spaces. He put the sun, moon, and stars in the sky. He put fish in the sea and birds above. He put animals, and finally people, on the land. Each day closed the same way: "So the evening and the morning were the [first, second, third…] day." Six ordinary days, in order, each with a beginning and an end. And after every step, God looked at His work and saw that it was good.
Then on the seventh day God did something surprising. He rested. He did not rest because He was tired. God never tires (). He rested to mark the work as finished and to give us a pattern. He "blessed" that day and "hallowed" it. That means He set it apart as special. Right at the start of the Bible, God shows us that He works, and then He rests, and both are good. The same God who spoke galaxies into place also built rest into the rhythm of the week. It is a gift to His people from the very first chapter.
Around the Table
God made the world in six days, like building with six big blocks. And on day seven He stopped to rest. Work, then rest!
Let's do it: Hold up six fingers as we count the days. Then fold your hands and whisper "rest" for day seven.
Notice the order. God made the spaces first, like the sky, sea, and land. Then He filled them with things, like stars, fish, and animals. Our God is not messy. He is wise and on purpose.
Let's talk: God rested even though He wasn't tired. Why might He want to show us that?
Each day ends with "evening and morning." That's a clear way of saying these were normal days. God could have made everything in a flash. But He chose six days and rest, and later He signed His name to it in .
Let's go deeper: Why does it matter that the Bible describes creation in real, ordered days and not as a vague "once upon a time"?

If you got to design one brand-new day of creation, what would you fill the sky, sea, or land with?— God filled His on purpose. Every single thing!
🛡️ Defending the Faith
When someone says the Bible is unscientific, remember what it actually shows. It shows order, sequence, and purpose. Spaces were formed, and then they were filled. It said all this long before any science book. We can share that gently and confidently, "with gentleness and respect" (), because truth never needs to shout.

The structure of is worth pointing out to your kids. Days 1 through 3 form the realms. Days 4 through 6 fill them. And day 7 crowns it all with rest. This isn't poetry pretending to be history. It's history told with beautiful order. Notice too that God's rest comes before the Fall. Sabbath is woven into a perfect, sinless world. That means rest is part of how we were designed to live, not a concession to weakness. As a father, you model what your children will believe about rest. If they only ever see you striving, they'll assume God is a taskmaster. Let them catch you stopping, unhurried and grateful, because the Maker Himself did.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for making the whole world in six days, so wisely and so good. Thank You that You also gave us rest. Help our family to work hard. And help us to rest in You. In Jesus' name, amen."
The God who made everything in six days also made rest. And both come from His good heart.
