Today's reading: Revelation 8–10

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 76 of 365 — trumpets and the prayers of the saints.)

The Heart of It

We often picture creation as God the Father speaking, and that's true. But Paul wants us to see something wonderful that we might miss. The One through whom everything was made is Jesus. "By Him all things were created." That's the galaxies you'll never count. That's the colors in a beetle's shell. That's even the angels and powers you can't see. Jesus didn't pop into existence in Bethlehem. He is "before all things." The baby in the manger is the same Person who flung the stars into space. And the verse ends with a phrase worth chewing on slowly: "in Him all things consist." The word consist means hold together. Right now, this very second, Jesus is keeping every atom and every heartbeat and every spinning planet from flying apart. He isn't a clockmaker who wound up the world and walked away. He is holding it together with His word of power ().

That changes how we memorize this verse. We're not just storing facts. We're learning who Jesus really is, so we can stand and tell others. When a friend says, "Jesus was a good teacher," you can gently add, "He's more than that. The Bible says everything was made through Him and for Him." That little phrase "for Him" matters too. The universe wasn't made for us to do whatever we want with it. It was made for Jesus, to bring Him glory and joy. That's why our lives find their true purpose only when they're aimed at Him. So as we hide these words in our hearts this week, let's say them slowly enough to worship. The Maker of everything became one of us to rescue us.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

Jesus made everything. And right now He's holding the whole world together so nothing falls apart! He is very, very strong and very, very kind.

Let's do it: Hold hands in a circle and squeeze gently. Say, "Jesus holds it ALL together!" Then try saying the first line of the verse together.

Middles 9–11

"In Him all things consist" means Jesus is holding the universe together this very moment. Try saying the verse in two parts. First say the part about creating. Then say the part about holding together.

Let's talk: Jesus made everything "for Him." What does that tell us about why we were made?

Older 12–15

This is one of the clearest verses about who Jesus really is. The eternal Son who is "before all things" is the Creator, not a creature. Memorize it word-perfect so you can quote it when someone says Jesus was "just a man."

Let's go deeper: Break the verse into four chunks and quote each one back. Which chunk is hardest to remember, and why?

What's the strongest thing you can think of? Now imagine being strong enough to hold every single thing together all at once. That's Jesus, right now!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says Jesus was only a wise teacher, you can kindly point to . The Bible says all things were created through Him, and only God can do that. Offered "with gentleness and respect" (), that's an invitation to look closer, not a put-down.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Memory work is discipleship, not decoration. When you help your children store , you are handing them a verse that doubles as a creed. It affirms the deity of Christ, His role as Creator, His present sustaining of the cosmos, and the purpose of creation, which is "for Him." Notice how this verse quietly answers the secular story your kids will hear at school. In that story, the universe is a purposeless accident sustained by nothing but blind physics. Scripture says otherwise. The same Jesus who will be on the throne in Revelation is upholding the very molecules of the textbook that argues against Him. Model unhurried, worshipful memorization. Say it slowly. Ask what each phrase means. And let your kids hear you still learning it too. Children imitate the dad who treasures Scripture far more than the dad who merely assigns it.

Let's Pray Together

"Lord Jesus, You made everything. And You hold everything together, even us. Thank You that the Maker of the stars knows our names. Help us remember these words. And help us tell others who You really are. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The One who holds the whole universe together is the same Jesus who holds me.
