Gifts from the Same Spirit
Month 4: Walking in the Spirit · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
4 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 112 of 365 — David becomes king over Judah.)The Heart of It
The church in Corinth was a noisy, gifted, slightly messy family of believers. Some could teach. Some could heal. Some prayed in new languages. Some had wisdom that helped everyone make hard decisions. And, being people, they had started comparing and competing. They acted as if some gifts made you a bigger deal than others. So Paul gently turned their eyes back to the source. He said, "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit" (). The gifts look different, but they all come from one Giver. It's like a single fire throwing off many sparks. It's like one big tree growing many kinds of branches. The Spirit hands out what He chooses, to whomever He chooses. And not one gift is an accident.
Then Paul tells us why the Spirit gives gifts at all. He says, "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all" (). Notice two beautiful things. First, look at the words "to each one." The Spirit gives to everybody who belongs to Jesus, not just pastors or famous people. Your gift might be quiet kindness. It might be making people laugh. It might be noticing when someone is sad. That's the Spirit at work in you. Second, look at the words "for the profit of all." Gifts are never trophies to brag about. They're tools to help others. A gift turned inward to show off has missed the whole point. The Spirit gives so the family grows strong together.
Around the Table
God's Spirit gives every one of us a special way to help. Helping is a gift!
Let's do it: Each person names one way they can help someone today, then go do one right now.
The same Spirit gives different gifts. And they're all for helping, not showing off.
Let's talk: What's one good thing you can do that might help our family this week?
Paul says the gifts are given "for the profit of all." The church is a team, not a contest.
Let's go deeper: Why do you think comparing our gifts to others' can actually hurt the whole body?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
How do we know spiritual gifts are real and not just talent? The Bible describes them as the Spirit's manifestation. That means God Himself is working through ordinary people. And the early church grew through exactly these gifts when no human plan could explain it. Real gifts always point away from the person and toward the Giver.

It helps to know the difference between the fruit of the Spirit, which we covered last week, and the gifts of the Spirit, which we're covering this week. Fruit is who you're becoming. It's Christlike character grown in every believer over time. Gifts are tools the Spirit hands out for serving others, and He gives them as He wills. We need both, but we should never confuse them. A person can have impressive gifts and immature character. That was precisely the Corinthian problem. That's why the New Testament keeps tying gifts to love and to "the profit of all." As you lead, prize what God prizes. Prize character over gifting. Teach your kids that the most spiritual person in the room is usually the most servant-hearted, not the most spectacular.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for Your Holy Spirit and the gifts He gives. Help each of us use what You've given us to help others and to build up Your family. Help us never to show off. In Jesus' name, amen."
The Spirit gave me something good. And He gave it so I could help someone else.
