Full of the Spirit's Power
Month 5: Jesus — God With Us · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: Luke 4:14-19
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. 15 He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone. 16 Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, 17 the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Memory Verse
“And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!””— Matthew 3:17 (BSB)

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. The Heart of It
Here is something easy to miss. Jesus, who is fully God, did His earthly ministry "in the power of the Spirit" (). The Spirit came down at His baptism and carried Him through the wilderness. Then Jesus returned to Galilee filled with the Holy Spirit. He walked into the synagogue in Nazareth, opened Isaiah, and read, "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor… recovery of sight to the blind… to release the oppressed" (). Then He said, in effect, "Today this is happening, in Me." Every miracle, every freed captive, every healed heart flowed through a life full of the Spirit.
Why does that matter for your family? Because the same Spirit who empowered Jesus is the One Jesus pours out on His people (). We are never asked to live the Christian life on our own steam. We were made to be filled. The Spirit empowers us for kindness, courage, and witness. This isn't about hype or showing off. It's about a quiet, real power. It helps a shy child speak up for Jesus. It helps a tired dad keep loving. It helps a family carry good news to hurting people. The fruit and the power go together. The Spirit makes us more like Jesus and sends us out like Jesus. Today you can simply ask the Father to fill you. He loves to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask ().
Around the Table
Jesus did amazing things with God's Helper, the Holy Spirit. And the Spirit can help you too!
Let's do it: Hands open like a cup: "Holy Spirit, please fill me up to be brave and kind!"
Jesus read that the Spirit sent Him to help the poor, the sad, and the trapped.
Let's talk: If the Spirit helps you, who is one hurting person you could help this week?
Even Jesus ministered in the Spirit's power. So we know we need the Spirit's filling too ().
Let's go deeper: What's the difference between trying hard in your own strength and being filled by the Spirit?

When have you needed to be braver than you felt?— That kind of courage often comes from the Holy Spirit helping you.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some say the Spirit's power and gifts ended long ago. But Scripture promises the Spirit "for you and your children, and for all who are afar off" (). That includes us. The God who empowered Jesus still fills His people today. ()
For Dad · Go Deeper
Luke is intentional. He frames Jesus' whole mission as Spirit-empowered (; 4:1; 4:14; 4:18), and Acts then shows that same Spirit poured out on the church. Classic Pentecostal teaching reads this as the pattern for us. The baptism in the Spirit is power for mission, available to every believer, your children included. Guard the lane. The goal is Christlike character and bold witness, never spectacle, never prosperity, never hype. Character over gifting, always. And the searching question stands. You can't lead your family into a Spirit-filled life you aren't pursuing yourself. Ask the Father afresh tonight to fill you.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, just as You filled Jesus with Your Spirit, fill our family too. Make us more like Jesus. Give us courage to help hurting people and share Your good news. In Jesus' name, amen."
I'm not meant to do this in my own strength. The Spirit fills me to live like Jesus.
