Today's Scripture

Read together: Matthew 4:1-4

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. 3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Memory Verse

And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”Matthew 3:17 (BSB)

Today's reading: 2 Samuel 19–21

The Heart of It

Right after the Father called Jesus "My beloved Son," the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. And there the devil tempted Him. Jesus had not eaten for forty days. He was hungry. So the tempter struck at exactly that need. "If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread" (). It sounded harmless. Jesus could make bread, and He was hungry. But the devil was whispering, "Doubt the Father. Take care of Yourself Your own way." Jesus didn't answer with willpower. He answered with Scripture. "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" ().

Notice the order again. The Father said "beloved Son" first. The testing came after. Jesus didn't fight temptation to win the Father's love. He fought from a love He already had. That's the secret for your kids too. Temptation often comes dressed as a shortcut to something we want. And it loves to make us doubt that God is good. Jesus shows the way through. Know you're loved. Fill your heart with God's Word. Answer the lie with the truth out loud. He faced the test we fail every day, and He won. So He could rescue us, and now He stands beside us when we're tempted ().

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

When the bad guy tried to trick Jesus, Jesus said God's words and the trick didn't work!

Let's do it: Practice saying out loud, "No, thank you — I obey God!"

Middles 7–9

Jesus beat temptation by remembering and saying Scripture. He didn't use His own strength.

Let's talk: What's a Bible verse you could say when you're tempted to disobey?

Older 10–13

Temptation often whispers, "Take the shortcut," or, "Does God really care about you?"

Let's go deeper: You are already loved. How does knowing that make it easier to say no to a tempting shortcut?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

People wonder, "If Jesus is God, could He even be tempted?" Yes. He became fully human and was "in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin" (). That's not a weakness in the story. It's the proof He truly understands us and can help us. ()

For Dad · Go Deeper

The devil's opening word was "if You are the Son of God." It was a direct assault on the identity the Father had just spoken. The enemy still works this way. He attacks who God says we are. The deepest battle against temptation, for you and your children, is not behavioral but identity-level. Sin loses much of its grip when a child is secure that they are loved before they obey. Notice too that Jesus wielded the written Word, not feelings. A father who knows Scripture well enough to answer lies in the moment gives his kids a weapon, not just advice. Hide the Word in your own heart so it's ready when the whisper comes.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that Jesus faced every temptation and never sinned. When we are tempted, remind us that we are loved. Bring Your words to our minds. And help us say no to what is wrong. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I don't fight temptation to earn love. I fight it because I'm already loved.
