Memory Verse

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.John 10:11 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Psalm 73; Psalm 76; Psalm 77; Psalm 78

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 143 of 365 — remembering God's faithfulness through the generations.)

The Heart of It

Today we slow down and hold one verse in our hands like a treasure. "The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." Every word counts. Good. He is not just powerful. He is kind. Lays down. No one steals His life. He gives it away on purpose. His life. That is the most costly thing He has. For the sheep. Not for strangers, but for the ones He loves and calls His own. When you say this verse this week, you are saying the whole good news in a single breath.

Then Jesus tells us what being His sheep is like. "My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand" (). Picture that. A hand so strong that nothing in the whole universe can pry it open. Your salvation doesn't depend on how tightly you hold on. It depends on how tightly He holds you. The same Shepherd who died for the sheep now keeps the sheep forever. That is why we are not afraid. We belong to a Shepherd who never loses one of His own.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Jesus holds His sheep in His strong hands, and nobody can pull them away. You are safe with Him!

Let's do it: Make a tight fist and say, "I'm safe in Jesus' hand!" Then say the verse together three times.

Middles 7–9

Let's memorize together. Try it in pieces: "I am the good shepherd…" then "…lays down His life for the sheep." Then put it together!

Let's talk: Which word in the verse is your favorite, and why?

Older 10–13

Sheep follow the shepherd whose voice they know. How would someone tell whether they really know Jesus' voice?

Let's go deeper: Jesus says no one can snatch you from His hand. How does that change the way you face fear or failure?

💬 Conversation Starter

Whose voice can you recognize the instant they speak, even without seeing them? Jesus' sheep learn His voice that same way. They listen to Him often.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some people claim the Bible was changed over time, so we can't trust Jesus' words. But we have thousands of early copies of John that agree with each other. We have far more of them, and far earlier ones, than for any other ancient book. The words of the Good Shepherd have been carefully kept for us.

For Dad · Go Deeper

There is deep rest in for a tired father. So much of parenting can feel like holding on by sheer force. If I just teach them enough, watch them closely enough, and pray hard enough, they'll be safe. But the safety of your children's souls was never resting in your grip. It rests in His. Your job is not to be their savior. It is to keep pointing them to the One whose hand never opens. Memorize this verse with them, not as a performance, but as a promise you are leaning on yourself. A dad who is secure in the Shepherd's hold leads with peace instead of panic.

Let's Pray Together

"Jesus, our Good Shepherd, thank You that no one can snatch us out of Your hand. Help us hear Your voice. Help us follow You closely. Help us rest in Your hold. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I am held by the Shepherd's hand. And nothing can pry it open.
