"I Am the Good Shepherd"

Month 5: Jesus — God With Us · Bible Story

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 10:11–15

11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me, 15 just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.

The Heart of It

In Bible times a shepherd lived with his sheep. He led them to green grass and clean water. He called each one by name. And he stood between them and the wolves. A hired helper would run when danger came, because he was only there for the pay. But the true shepherd loved the sheep as his own. So when Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd," everyone listening knew exactly what He meant. I am the One who stays. I am the One who protects. I am the One who knows you by name.

But Jesus said something a shepherd would never normally say. "The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." A shepherd might risk his life to save the flock. But Jesus came to lay His life down for them. He wasn't surprised by the cross. He walked toward it on purpose, out of love. Sheep wander. They get lost. They can't protect themselves. And honestly, that is a picture of us (). Here is the wonder of the good news. The Shepherd didn't scold His foolish sheep from a safe distance. He stepped into the danger and gave Himself so they could live. That is the kind of God who came to be with us.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Jesus is like a good shepherd, and we are His little sheep. He keeps us safe and never runs away!

Let's do it: Say "baa baa" like a sheep, then snuggle close and say, "Jesus keeps me safe!"

Middles 7–9

A hired worker runs from the wolf, but the good shepherd stays and protects the sheep. Jesus stayed for us, all the way to the cross.

Let's talk: What is the difference between someone who has to help you and someone who loves you?

Older 10–13

Jesus didn't just risk His life. He planned to give it. He said no one takes it from Him. He lays it down Himself ().

Let's go deeper: Why does it matter that Jesus chose the cross instead of being forced into it?

💬 Conversation Starter

If you got lost in a giant store, what would you want the person who finds you to be like? That is the kind of Shepherd Jesus is. He comes looking for us.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How do we know Jesus really meant He was God's promised Shepherd? Because the Old Testament said God Himself would shepherd His people (). And Jesus took that very title for Himself. He wasn't borrowing a nice word picture. He was claiming to be the LORD who came to gather the lost.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Notice that Jesus defines goodness as giving yourself away, not protecting yourself. The hired worker's failure isn't cruelty. It is that he loves himself more than the sheep, so he runs. That quiet test sits over every father. When leading the family costs you comfort, or sleep, or being right, do you stay or do you run? You shepherd best not by being impressive but by being present. You shepherd best by being willing to lay things down for the ones in your care. Your evening. Your preferences. Your pride. You can only do this because the Good Shepherd already laid down His life for you. You lead out of a fullness you have received, not a debt you are paying.

Let's Pray Together

"Jesus, thank You for being our Good Shepherd. Thank You for knowing us by name and giving Your life for us. Help us hear Your voice and follow close to You. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Jesus is the Shepherd who stays. And He gave His life for sheep like me.
