⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Genesis 2:7–9, 15

7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed. 9 Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. … 15 Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Job 4–7

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 15 of 365 — Job's friends begin to speak.)

The Heart of It

When God made the first man, He did something different. It was not how He made the stars and the seas. For everything else, God simply spoke and it appeared. But for Adam, the Bible says the LORD "formed man of the dust of the ground" (). He was like a potter kneeling down, working clay with His own hands. Then He came close and "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." The lifeless shape became "a living being." Think about that picture. God did not make the first person from a distance. He bent low. He shaped him on purpose. He gave him life from His own breath.

This tells us two beautiful things at once. First, you are made of ordinary stuff. You are made of dust. So there is no room for pride. We are creatures, not the Creator. But second, you are filled with the very life-breath of God. So there is no room for despair either. You are precious, and you are made with care. God then gave Adam a real home. He gave him a garden full of good trees. And He gave him real work to do, "to tend and keep it" (). From the very first day, people were made to know God, to enjoy His good world, and to do meaningful work for Him. That is still why you exist.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God made the first man, Adam, with His own hands — and then breathed life into him! God made you with care, too.

Let's do it: Cup your hands like you're shaping clay, then blow a big breath. "God made people on purpose!"

Middles 7–9

God spoke the stars into being, but He formed the man with His hands and breath. Why do you think He did it so carefully?

Let's talk: God gave Adam work to do in the garden. What good "work" has God given you in our home?

Older 10–13

zooms in on how God made the first human. He shaped him by hand, then gave him the breath of life. Being made from dust keeps us humble. Being filled with God's breath makes us precious.

Let's go deeper: How does it change your day to know God made you carefully and gave you real work to do for Him?

Have you ever made something with your own hands? Maybe a drawing, a fort, or a snack? How did you feel about it when it was done? That's a tiny taste of how God feels about you.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say humans are just one more animal that happened by accident. But Genesis shows people are unique. We were formed by God's own hand and given His breath of life. We were made on purpose, to know God. As says, we can explain this hope gently and respectfully. The evidence of careful design is all around us. It is inside us too.

For Dad · Go Deeper

The two creation passages, and 2, are not two contradicting stories, as skeptics often claim. They are a wide-angle view and then a close-up of the same event. Chapter 1 gives the order of creation. Chapter 2 zooms in on day six to show God's personal care in making humanity. Notice the dignity packed into one verse. Man is from the dust (Hebrew adamah, "ground"), so we stay humble. Yet he is animated by God's own breath, so we are sacred. This is the answer to both pride and shame. Those are the two ditches your children will spend their lives walking between. Teach them early that their worth isn't earned by performance. It was breathed into them by God at the start.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for forming people with Your own hands. Thank You for giving us life from Your breath. Help us remember we are made on purpose. We are made to know You. And we are made to do good work. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You
