Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Day 2 of 365 — the story moves from the first family to Noah.)The Heart of It
Today we slow down on just one verse. It is only ten short words, but those words hold up the whole Bible. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Memorizing is not a school chore. It is hiding treasure in your heart. The psalmist said, "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You" (). When a verse lives inside us, the Holy Spirit can bring it back right when we need it. He can use it to calm a worried child. He can use it to answer a hard question. He can even spark worship while we tie our shoes.
Now notice how the verse is built. It begins with God. He is the first word, and He is the main character of everything. Before there was a beginning, He already was. And He is the One who acts. He created. What He made is real. The heavens above and the earth below. The things we can see, and the things we cannot. A child who carries this verse carries a whole way of seeing the world. God is first. God is the Maker. And the world we touch came from His hand. That is worth knowing by heart for life.
Around the Table
Let's say our verse with our hands! "In the beginning" (cover eyes), "God" (point up), "created" (build with hands), "the heavens and the earth" (big circle arms).
Let's do it: Say it three times with the motions, a little louder each time.
Hiding a verse in your heart means knowing it so well it pops up when you need it. What is the very first word of our verse? And why does that word matter?
Let's talk: Where could you say this verse this week? At breakfast? In the car? Before bed?
This one verse answers four big questions. Is there a God? Did He make us? Is the world real? Who is in charge? See if you can find each answer in those ten words.
Let's go deeper: How could help you answer a friend who says nobody really knows where the world came from?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
We can trust this verse. It has been carefully copied and carried for thousands of years. And it stands today exactly as it was first written. The first words of the Bible still stand. Knowing them by heart lets us "always be ready to give a defense" ().
For Dad · Go Deeper
Scripture memory is one of the best habits you can build into a family. It costs almost nothing and gives back enormously. You don't need a fancy program. You need repetition and joy. Say the verse at the same moment each day. Pick a meal, or the car, or bedtime. Use motions for the littles, and let the olders explain the meaning back to you. Be patient with yourself, too. When you know it cold, your kids hear that it matters. Aim for the heart, not just the head. A memorized verse becomes a sword the Spirit can use () long after this devotional is closed.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for Your Word. Help us hide it in our hearts. Help us remember that You are first. You are the Maker, and the whole world is Yours. In Jesus' name, amen."
God's first ten words are now mine to carry. He is first, and He made it all.
