My Lord and My God!

Month 7: He Is Risen! — Why We Believe · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 20:28–31

28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

Memory Verse

Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”Luke 24:39 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Micah 1–4

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 201 of 365 — Micah foretells a ruler born in Bethlehem.)

The Heart of It

When Thomas finally saw the risen Jesus, his whole heart spilled out in five words. "My Lord and my God!" (). This is the highest point of John's Gospel. Here was a devoted Jewish man who knew there is only one God. He looked at Jesus of Nazareth, flesh and bones and nail-scars and all, and he called Him God. And Jesus did not correct him. Jesus accepted the worship, because it was true. Then John tells us exactly why he wrote his whole book. He wrote it "so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name" (). The resurrection wasn't written down just so we would know a fact. It was written so we would believe, and find life.

So this is the perfect place to worship as a family. Everything we've walked through this week has been leading right here. Jesus is alive. He has a real body. Hundreds saw Him. He is gentle with our doubts. He fills us with His Spirit. He restores us when we fail. And the only fitting answer to a living, risen Lord is the cry of Thomas: My Lord and my God! That is not just a statement of belief. It is giving ourselves over to Him. To call Jesus "my Lord" is to give Him the throne of my life. To call Him "my God" is to bow down and adore Him. Let's make those words our family's worship today. And our life.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Thomas looked at Jesus and shouted, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus is alive and He is God!

Let's do it: Throw your hands up like Thomas and cheer together, "My Lord and my God!"

Middles 7–9

John wrote his whole book so that we would believe Jesus is God's Son, and have new life in Him.

Let's talk: What is the difference between just knowing about Jesus and actually believing in Him?

Older 10–13

Thomas believed in only one God, yet he called Jesus "God." And Jesus accepted his worship. It is one of the clearest places in the Bible that shows Jesus is fully God.

Let's go deeper: Why is it so important that Jesus is not just a good teacher, but truly God? What would change if He weren't?

💬 Conversation Starter

If Jesus walked into our home right now, what is the first thing you would want to say to Him? Thomas just blurted out the truth: "My Lord and my God!"

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says, "Jesus never claimed to be God," point them to this moment. Thomas worshiped Jesus as "my Lord and my God." Now, angels and apostles always stopped people who tried to worship them. But Jesus did not stop Thomas. Jesus blessed him. John writes this down on purpose, to teach us exactly that. Share it gently and with respect, ready to give a reason for your hope ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

This is a family-worship day, so let it actually be worship, not just another lesson. The deity of Christ is the doctrine the whole week has been building toward. It deserves more than your kids' notebooks. It deserves their hearts and their voices. Think about closing tonight by singing a simple resurrection song, or a "Jesus is Lord" song, together. Then invite each person to finish the sentence, "Jesus, You are my Lord because…" Confessing Jesus as Lord out loud, as a family, plants something deep. As Tony Evans often reminds fathers, the home is the first sanctuary, and dad is its lead worshiper. Your kids learn that Jesus is worthy not mainly from your arguments, but from watching you adore Him.

Let's Pray Together

"Lord Jesus, You are alive, and You are God. Like Thomas we say with all our hearts, 'My Lord and my God!' We believe in You — give our family new life in Your name. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Jesus is alive. So He is my Lord and my God, worthy of all my worship.
