📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Luke 2–3

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time.

The Heart of It

Jesus said something amazing about how the world would recognize His followers. He didn't say, "By this everyone will know you are My disciples, if you wear the right clothes." He didn't say, "if you win every argument," or "if you know the most Bible verses." He said, "By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another" (). Love is the family resemblance. People watch how the children of God treat each other. They see us be patient, and kind, and forgiving, and quick to serve. And they catch a glimpse of Jesus Himself. Our love is a window others look through to see Him.

John pushes this even further. "No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us" (). Think about that. Nobody can see God directly. But when His people love one another, the invisible God becomes a little bit visible. That's a big calling for an ordinary family. The way you treat your brother when no one's watching. The way Mom and Dad speak when they're tired. The way we share and forgive. That's not small stuff. It's a billboard. It tells the watching world, and even the watching neighbors, "These people belong to Jesus."

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

When we love each other, people can tell we belong to Jesus! Our love shows Him to others.

Let's do it: Pick one family member and do something loving for them before bedtime.

Middles 7–9

People can't see God with their eyes — but they can see His love when we love one another.

Let's talk: Who might be "watching" how our family loves each other? What do you hope they see?

Older 10–13

Love is the family badge of Jesus' followers. The way we treat each other every day makes the invisible God visible.

Let's go deeper: Has someone's love ever made you curious about Jesus? How could your love do that for someone this week?

💬 Conversation Starter

What's one thing about our family that a visitor would notice right away? Is it something you'd be proud for Jesus to see?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

How did the early church grow so fast in a world that hated it? Outsiders were stunned by the love of Christians. They cared for the sick. They fed the poor. They even loved their enemies. A pagan writer once marveled, "See how they love one another." Changed lives and self-giving love are powerful evidence that something real is at work ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Here's a sobering and hopeful truth. Your home is the first mission field. And your children's love for one another is part of your family's witness. The watching world often forms its first opinion of Christ not from a sermon, but from a Christian household. And yours is on display to neighbors, relatives, and the friends your kids bring over. This isn't a call to put on a show of a happy family. It's a call to let the gospel actually shape how you handle conflict, tiredness, and disappointment in front of your kids. Apologize when you're wrong. Forgive out loud. The most evangelistic thing a father can do this week may simply be to love his family where they can see it, so that "see how they love one another" becomes true under his own roof.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, let our love for one another be so real that people see Jesus in us. Make our home a place where the world catches a glimpse of You. Help us love when we're tired. Help us forgive when it's hard. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The way I love my family is a window others look through to see Jesus.
