Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time.

The Heart of It

This week we've learned about loving one another. Today we turn it into worship. The best way to answer God's love is to sing Him a song of thanks. was made to be sung out loud as a family. One voice calls out a line. Then everyone answers back with the same words, twenty-six times: "His loving devotion endures forever." Go ahead and try it tonight. One person reads, "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!" Then everyone answers, "His loving devotion endures forever!" Keep going through the verses. The phrase loving devotion means God's faithful, promise-keeping love. It is the strong love that never quits.

Now look at what this psalm thanks God for. He made the heavens. He spread out the earth. He made the great lights, the sun to rule the day and the moon and stars to rule the night (). The same love that saves us is the love that made us. It is six days of a Maker who is good. The psalm marches from creation all the way through God rescuing His people. The refrain never changes, because God's love never changes. That's the love we've been talking about all week. It came first. It was poured into our hearts. And now it overflows to one another. A family that sings "His mercy endures forever" together is a family being trained to trust a love that will never run out.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God's love never, ever ends! We can sing thank-You to Him for being so good.

Let's do it: Sing or shout "His love never ends!" three times, getting louder each time.

Middles 7–9

says the same thing 26 times because it is so true. God's love endures forever.

Let's talk: Take turns naming things you're thankful for. After each one, everyone answers, "For His mercy endures forever!"

Older 10–13

The psalm praises God as both Maker and Rescuer. The same strong love that made you also saves you.

Let's go deeper: Why is it a comfort that God's love "endures forever" and doesn't depend on how we behave?

What's your favorite song to sing loud, and why?Tonight let's make Psalm 136 a song our family sings together!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

The psalm names God as the Maker who set the sun, moon, and stars in place (). We believe He did this in six real days, just as Genesis says. And the order we see in creation points to a wise Designer, not to chance. First came the laws that hold things together. Then came light. Then came life. We can sing this truth and defend it, kindly and confidently ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Family worship doesn't require a band or a polished voice. It requires a dad willing to lead his children to God's throne with thanks. is a gift here, because its repetition makes everyone a full participant, even the three-year-old. Nobody is left out of the refrain. Singing and saying truth together does something teaching alone can't. It lodges the goodness of God in the heart, not just the head. So tie this week's theme home. We love one another because His love endures forever and reached us first. Don't aim for impressive. Aim for joyful and regular. The fruit of a singing home shows up years later, in children who instinctively turn to God in both joy and trouble.
