Looking Ahead: Living Sent in Jesus' Love

Month 10: Loving One Another · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Ephesians 5:8–10 & Matthew 5:14–16

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, 9 for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 Test and prove what pleases the Lord. — Ephesians 5:8-10
14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. — Matthew 5:14-16

Memory Verse

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.1 Corinthians 13:13 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Luke 19–20

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 300 of 365 — Zacchaeus, the triumphal entry, and Jesus' authority.)

The Heart of It

Yesterday we looked back. Today we look ahead. A whole month learning to love one another wasn't meant to stay inside the four walls of our home. It was meant to spill out. Paul says it plainly. "You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light" (). We don't become the light by trying hard. We are light because we belong to Jesus, who is the Light of the world. And light has one job. To shine. The love God grew in us this month is the fuel. The world outside is where it is meant to glow.

Jesus said it even more directly. "You are the light of the world... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (). Notice the goal. It isn't so people say how nice our family is. It is so they look up and give glory to God. That's what it means to live "sent." Every kind word, every forgiveness, every act of patient love your family practices is a little lamp in a dark room. It points a watching world back to the One who loved them first. As we close this month and step into the next, the prayer of our home is simple. Lord, take the love You've grown in us, and send it out.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

Jesus says YOU are like a little light! When you're kind, people see something beautiful and think about God.

Let's do it: Turn off the lights, hold up a flashlight or candle, and say together, "Let your light shine!"

Middles 7–9

We're not light because we're good enough. We're light because we belong to Jesus. Our job is to shine so people see God, not just us.

Let's talk: Who is one person outside our family that God might want us to show His love to this week?

Older 10–13

Paul says to "find out what is acceptable to the Lord" (). Light isn't passive. It actively looks for ways to please God. The love we learned at home is meant to send us out as witnesses.

Let's go deeper: What's one specific way you could let your light shine at school or with friends this month? And how does it point people to God, not just to you?

If our family were a lamp, where do you think God most wants us to shine right now? And to whom?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Someone may say, "Christians are just hypocrites, no different from anyone else." We can answer kindly. Jesus said people would know His followers by their love (). And changed lives that forgive, serve, and shine are real evidence the gospel works. We don't claim to be perfect. We point to the One who is. Always be ready to give that reason "with gentleness and respect" ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

A devotional month can quietly become inward-focused, all about our family growing nicer. Today's lane correction is missional. The Spirit fills us with love and power for witness (). The same Spirit who grew the fruit of love in your home this month is the Spirit who sends you outward. So as you turn the page to a new month, cast a "sent" vision for your kids. They are not just being raised to be safe and pleasant. They are being raised to be light in a dark world. Practically, that means letting them see you love your neighbors, serve the inconvenient, and speak of Jesus naturally. Sam Rainer notes that children rarely catch a mission they never watched their parents live. Your home isn't the finish line of discipleship. It is the launching pad.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for making us light in the Lord. Take the love You've grown in our family and send it out, to neighbors, friends, and strangers. Let our light shine so others see Your goodness and glorify You. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The love God grows at home was never meant to stay home. We are light, sent to shine.
