God Keeps Promises Right on Time

Month 2: The God Who Keeps Promises · Why We Believe

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Genesis 21:1-2 & 2 Peter 3:9

1 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised. 2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised. — Genesis 21:1-2
9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. — 2 Peter 3:9

Memory Verse

Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and Sarah will have a son.”Genesis 18:14 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Exodus 30–32

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 40 of 365 — even after the golden calf, God's mercy holds His promise steady.)

The Heart of It

Look carefully at how the baby arrives. "Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him" (). Not early. Not late. At the set time. God had a calendar all along. The day He named is the day it happened. Sometimes people wonder whether God has forgotten them, because His answer hasn't come yet. But a promise that hasn't happened yet is not a promise that failed. It is a promise waiting for its appointed time.

That is exactly what Peter explains: "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish" (). God may seem slow to us. But He is never slow to Himself. He is patient, working out a bigger plan than we can see. We can believe God's promises because His track record is perfect. He kept His word to Abraham. He kept His word to send Jesus exactly "when the fullness of the time had come" (). And He will keep His word to come again. A God who is always right on time has earned our trust forever.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God didn't forget Abraham and Sarah. He gave them the baby on exactly the right day He had picked!

Let's do it: Clap a slow countdown. "3… 2… 1!" God's promises always arrive right on time.

Middles 7–9

What feels "slow" to us is really God being patient. He is never running late on His promises.

Let's talk: Have you ever felt like God was slow to answer a prayer? What might He have been doing while you waited?

Older 10–13

says Isaac came "at the set time." God keeps a perfect schedule, and His delays always have a loving reason ().

Let's go deeper: How does God's perfect track record give you confidence to trust Him with the future?

💬 Conversation Starter

Has anyone ever promised you something and then forgotten? How is God different from that?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

When someone says, "God's promises never come true. People just make excuses": We can answer kindly. The Bible is full of promises God already kept on schedule. He gave a son to Abraham. He sent a Savior, born "when the fullness of the time had come" (). A promise that hasn't happened yet isn't broken. It's waiting for the set time. God's perfect record so far is why we trust the promises still to come ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

Faith is not believing God will do what you want when you want it. It is trusting that He will do what He said at the time He chose. That distinction protects your children from a brittle, transactional faith that collapses the first time a prayer is delayed. Teach them, and preach to yourself, that delay is not denial. God waited until Abraham was a hundred so that no one could credit the miracle to human strength. In the same way, He may be slow-walking something in your own life for reasons you'll only understand later. "At the appointed time" is a phrase to rest in, not to fight. Model patient trust, and your kids will learn that God is worth waiting for.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that You are never late and never forget. When Your answers feel slow, help us trust that You are being patient and good. We believe Your promises, because You always keep them. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God is never late. His promises always arrive at the set time.
