Thunder on the Mountain: God Gives the Law
Month 3: The Great Rescue · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: Exodus 19:16–20 & Exodus 20:1–3
16 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud was upon the mountain, and a very loud blast of the ram’s horn went out, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke, because the LORD had descended on it in fire. And the smoke rose like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. 19 And as the sound of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him in the thunder. 20 The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the summit. So Moses went up, — Exodus 19:16-20
1 And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods before Me. — 20:1-3

Today's reading: Joshua 1–4
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 82 of 365 — Israel finally crosses into the Promised Land.)The Heart of It
Three months after the rescue from Egypt, God brought His freed people to a mountain called Sinai. And the mountain shook. There was thunder and lightning. There was a thick cloud. A ram's horn blasted so loud the whole camp trembled (). The LORD came down in fire, and the people stood back in awe. This was not a tame, cozy moment. It was holy. The same God who had broken their chains was now showing them how big He is. How pure. How worthy. Rescue came first. The rules came after. God did not say, "Obey Me and maybe I'll save you." He saved them first. Then He gave them His good words to live by.
And the very first word was about Him. "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt… You shall have no other gods before Me" (). Notice the order. He reminds them of the rescue before He asks for anything. That is always how God works. He loves us first. And our obedience is the glad answer of a heart that has been set free. The Law was never meant to earn God's love. It was meant to show a rescued people how to live close to the God who already loved them. When we keep His words, we are not paying Him back. We are walking the path He cleared for us, the path that leads to life.
Around the Table
The mountain shook with thunder because God is BIG and so good! His very first rule was to love only Him.
Let's do it: Stomp your feet like thunder. Then whisper, "God is holy!"
God rescued His people first. Then He gave them His good rules. Why does the order matter?
Let's talk: When you obey Mom or Dad, are you trying to earn our love? Or do you already have it?
"You shall have no other gods before Me" comes right after God names Himself as the Rescuer (). Grace always comes before commands.
Let's go deeper: What other gods does our world try to put first today? Those are the things we love more than God.

What is the loudest sound you have ever heard? Now imagine standing at a mountain that shook with God's voice. Would you feel scared, amazed, or both?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
How do we know this really happened? Israel didn't claim one prophet snuck up a mountain alone. They claimed a whole nation saw the fire and heard the voice (). A whole people would not make up and pass down a story they all knew was false. With gentleness and respect (), we can say it plainly. A national memory this public is hard to fake.

Watch the order in Exodus carefully, because the gospel hangs on it. Redemption precedes obedience. God rescued Israel "with an outstretched arm" () before a single command was spoken at Sinai. This is the grace-first pattern your home must breathe. We obey because we are loved, never to become loved. Get this backward and you will raise either anxious rule-keepers or quiet rebels. Get it right and the commandments become a gift. They are guardrails on the road to joy, not a ladder to climb. Examine your own leadership tonight. Are your kids learning to obey out of fear of you? Or out of security in a Father who already delights in them?

Let's Pray Together
"Father, You are holy and great. The mountain shook before You. Thank You that You rescued us first and loved us first. Help us love You with all our hearts. And help us put nothing before You. In Jesus' name, amen."
God rescued me before He asked anything of me. So I obey from love, not for love.
