The Law Shows We Need a Savior

Month 3: The Great Rescue · Heart Matters

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Exodus 20:4–17 & Romans 3:20

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain. 8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant or livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. 12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” — Exodus 20:4-17
20 Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin. — Romans 3:20

Memory Verse

And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.Deuteronomy 6:5 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Joshua 12–15

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 85 of 365 — the land is divided among the tribes.)

The Heart of It

The Ten Commandments are good and beautiful. No other gods. No idols. Honor your parents. Do not steal or lie or covet (). They show us exactly what a life of love for God and neighbor looks like. But every honest heart discovers something. The more we read them, the more we see that we have broken them. Have you ever wanted something so badly that you envied a friend who had it? That's coveting. Have you ever told even a small lie? That breaks the ninth commandment. God's Law is like a clean mirror. It doesn't make our faces dirty. It just shows us the dirt that's already there.

That is exactly what Paul means: "by the law is the knowledge of sin" (). The Law was never given so we could earn our way to God by being good enough. No one can. It was given to be a teacher that drives us to Jesus (). A mirror can show you that your face is dirty, but it can't wash you clean. Only Jesus can do that. So when the commandments make us feel our need, that's not bad news. It's the first step toward the best news. The Law says, "You can't fix this yourself." And then the gospel says, "But Jesus already did." That's why we don't despair at our sin. We run to the Savior.

Around the Table

Littles 3–6

God's rules are good, but nobody keeps them perfectly — only Jesus did! He helps us when we mess up.

Let's do it: Look in a mirror, then say, "A mirror shows a dirty face, but Jesus washes my heart clean!"

Middles 7–9

The Law is like a mirror. It shows the problem, but it can't fix it. Who is the only One who can wash us clean?

Let's talk: Which commandment is hardest for you to keep? You're not alone. That's why we need Jesus.

Older 10–13

"By the law is the knowledge of sin" (). The Law shows us the sickness. Jesus is the cure.

Let's go deeper: If keeping rules could save us, why did Jesus have to die? What does that tell you about how serious sin is?

What does a mirror do — and what can't it do? How is God's Law a little like a mirror for our hearts?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say, "I'm a good person, so I'll be fine with God." But the Ten Commandments set the standard at perfect love for God and others. And says we have all fallen short. We can say gently () that the question isn't whether we're better than the next person. It's that we all need a Rescuer. And God has given us one in Jesus.

For Dad · Go Deeper

The old teachers spoke of the Law's "three uses." The one your family needs most tonight is the tutoring use. Here the Law acts as a teacher that exposes sin and shuts every mouth, "that all the world may become guilty before God" (). Resist the constant temptation in family discipleship to turn the commandments into mere behavior management, a kind of "be good so things go smoothly." That breeds little Pharisees. Instead, let the Law do its deeper work. Let it press your children, and you, to the end of self-effort, so that grace tastes like grace. A home that only preaches "try harder" will exhaust everyone. A home that lets the Law drive it to the cross will rest. Model honest confession of your own sin in front of your kids. It preaches the gospel louder than a thousand corrections.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, Your Law is good. It shows us we cannot save ourselves. Thank You for sending Jesus to do what we could never do. Thank You that He washes us clean. Help us run to Him every time we fall short. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The Law shows me I can't save myself. And that's exactly what sends me running to Jesus.
