Jesus Promises the Helper
Month 4: Walking in the Spirit · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 14:15–18
15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Today's reading: Judges 6–7
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 91 of 365 — Gideon learns that God wins battles with His own strength.)The Heart of It
It was Jesus' last night with His friends before the cross, and they were afraid. He was talking about leaving, and their hearts were sinking. So Jesus made them a promise that would change everything: "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper" (). The word He chose means one called alongside. A comforter. An encourager. A friend who comes near to help. And notice the little word "another." Jesus was saying, "You've had Me beside you. Now Someone just like Me will come to be with you. And He will stay forever."
That Helper is the Holy Spirit, and He is not a feeling or a force. He is God Himself, the third Person of the Trinity, just as fully God as the Father and the Son. Jesus said the world cannot receive Him because the world doesn't know Him. But His own people would know Him, because the Spirit "dwells with you and will be in you" (). Then He said the sweetest thing of all: "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you" (v. 18). Followers of Jesus are never left alone. The same God who walked the dusty roads of Galilee with His friends now lives inside everyone who belongs to Him.
Around the Table
Jesus promised His friends a Helper who would never leave. That Helper is God's Holy Spirit!
Let's do it: Give yourself a big hug and say, "Jesus does not leave me alone!"
Jesus called the Spirit "another Helper" — Someone just like Himself. What kinds of things does a helper do for you?
Let's talk: Why would the disciples feel comforted to hear they'd never be alone?
The Holy Spirit is fully God — a Person, not a power. Jesus said He would "abide with you forever" ().
Let's go deeper: How is having God's Spirit inside you different from having a helpful feeling?

Who's the one person you always want with you when something hard happens? Jesus gives us a Helper who is always there, every single moment.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
How do we know the Holy Spirit is real and not just a nice idea? Jesus personally promised Him (). And Jesus proved His words true by rising from the dead. Within weeks, the frightened disciples were changed into bold witnesses. Changed lives are evidence you can see.

Pause on that word "another." In Greek, Jesus used allos, which means "another of the same kind." He did not use heteros, which means "another of a different kind." The Spirit isn't a downgrade from having Jesus around. He is God just as truly as Jesus is, come to be even nearer than Jesus could be in His body. He is in you, not merely with you. This is the quiet glory your kids need to grow up knowing. The Christian life was never meant to be lived on willpower while God watches from a distance. He moved in. So lead your family tonight not as a man trying to be good enough, but as a man indwelt by God Himself. Let that settle your own heart before you teach theirs.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that Jesus did not leave us alone. He gave us Your Holy Spirit to be with us forever. Help our family to know Him. Help us lean on Him every day. In Jesus' name, amen."
I am never alone. Jesus gave me a Helper who stays forever.
