Today's reading: 2 Kings 11-13
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 100 of 365 — young Joash is crowned and God preserves the royal line.)The Heart of It
When Jesus finished the Sermon on the Mount, the people were stunned. The crowds "were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes" (). The scribes were experts. But they taught by quoting other teachers. They would say, "Rabbi So-and-so says this. Rabbi So-and-so says that." Jesus quoted no one. Again and again He said, "But I say to you…" He spoke as though the words were His own to give. And they were. Even the guards sent to arrest Him came back empty-handed. They said, "Never has anyone spoken like this man!" ().
That authority is one of the reasons we believe Jesus is who He said He is. A merely human teacher passes along wisdom he got from somewhere else. But Jesus spoke as the source. He was calm, clear, and final, about God, about the human heart, and about eternity. He never said "I think" or "perhaps." He said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away" (). Two thousand years later, His Sermon on the Mount is still the most quoted teaching in human history. It is the most translated. It is the most life-changing. Ordinary words fade. The words of the Son of God do not.
Around the Table
When Jesus taught, everybody's eyes got really big! No one had ever talked about God the way Jesus did, because Jesus IS God.
Let's do it: Make a surprised "wow!" face like the crowd, and say, "No one teaches like Jesus!"
Other teachers said, "A famous teacher said this." Jesus said, "I say to you." He didn't borrow His words. They were His own.
Let's talk: What's the difference between someone repeating a rule and the person who actually made the rule?
When Jesus said "But I say to you," He claimed a divine authority no rabbi would dare claim. He spoke as the Author of the words, not just the messenger.
Let's go deeper: Why is the authority of Jesus' teaching evidence for who He is, and not just for how smart He was?

Who's an expert you really trust? Maybe a doctor, a coach, or a builder. Why is Jesus the one expert who's always, completely right?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
When someone says, "Jesus was just a good moral teacher, like Buddha or Socrates": We can answer kindly but clearly. Good moral teachers point away from themselves to the truth. Jesus pointed to Himself. He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (). He claimed to forgive sins. He accepted worship. He foretold His own resurrection, and then He rose. A merely good teacher who said those things would be either lying or unwell. His teaching is so wise and good. That is exactly why we should take His claims about Himself seriously. His words have the ring of truth, because the One speaking them is the Truth. So we hold this out with gentleness and respect, ready to give a reason for our hope ().

C.S. Lewis famously closed the door on the "great teacher only" option. A man who said the things Jesus said is not merely a great human teacher. He is either Lord, a liar, or a lunatic. And the calm wisdom of the Sermon on the Mount rules out the last two. This matters for your fathering, because the authority of Jesus is the foundation under your authority in the home. You don't lead your children by raw willpower or volume. You lead them under the authority of Christ. You point past yourself to the Teacher whose words never fail. When your kids see you submitting to Jesus' words, obeying them even when they're costly, they learn that His authority is real, not just a slogan. Lead as one who is also led.

Let's Pray Together
"Lord Jesus, no one ever taught like You. Help our family believe Your words and trust that they are true. Help us follow You with glad hearts. In Jesus' name, amen."
Jesus didn't borrow His words from anyone. He is the Author, and His words will never fail.
