Blessed Even When It Hurts
Month 4: The Teacher (Part 1) · Heart Matters
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 5:10-12
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.
Memory Verse
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”— Matthew 5:9 (BSB)

Today's reading: 2 Kings 14-16
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 101 of 365 — kings of Israel and Judah follow or forsake the Lord, and the cost is real.)The Heart of It
Jesus saves the most surprising blessing for last. He has blessed the humble, the merciful, the pure, and the peacemakers. Now He says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness." And, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me." Wait. Blessed when people are mean to you for following Jesus? That doesn't sound like a blessing at all. But Jesus means it. He's not saying the pain is good. He's saying that when you're mistreated for doing right and loving Him, you are standing exactly where the prophets stood. And God Himself sees you and rewards you.
This is a heart matter because of why it hurts. Being teased for being mean isn't a blessing. That's just a consequence. But sometimes you get left out, laughed at, or treated unfairly because you told the truth. Or because you stood up for someone. Or because you wouldn't go along with the crowd, so you could follow Jesus. That is something God treasures. Jesus even tells us how to respond. "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven." Not pretend-happy. Not bitter. Just quietly joyful. We know the One we belong to, and we know where all of this is heading. A heart anchored to Jesus can stay soft and sweet even when the world is sharp.
Around the Table
Sometimes people might be unkind because you love Jesus. When that happens, Jesus is right there with you, and He is very proud of you.
Let's do it: Give a big thumbs-up and say, "I can be brave and kind because Jesus is with me!"
Being teased for doing wrong is just a consequence. But being treated badly for doing right and loving Jesus is something God actually rewards.
Let's talk: What's the difference between getting in trouble for being mean, and being mistreated for doing the right thing?
Jesus links our suffering to what the prophets faced. We stand in a long line of faithful people. And the reward waits for us in heaven, not always here.
Let's go deeper: Where might following Jesus cost you something with your friends? How can you respond with joy instead of bitterness?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
The first disciples were persecuted, beaten, and killed for saying Jesus rose. Yet they never took it back. Honest men don't suffer and die for a story they know is made up. Their courage is real evidence for a real resurrection ().

Here is a tender, important truth. This is the only Beatitude Jesus repeats and expands. That tells us how badly His followers would need it. Our children are growing up in a culture that increasingly treats biblical conviction as offensive. They will feel the pinch at school, online, and among friends. Your task is not to shield them from every hard moment. It is to prepare their hearts. Then, when it comes, they will recognize it as fellowship with Christ, rather than as evidence that something has gone wrong. Teach them the difference between suffering for righteousness and suffering for being foolish or unkind. And model it. When you take a hit for doing right, let them see how you respond. Not with self-pity or rage, but with the strange, settled joy of someone who knows his reward is secure with the Lord.

Let's Pray Together
"Jesus, give us brave and tender hearts. When loving You costs us something, help us stay kind. Help us stand firm. Help us even rejoice. We belong to You, and our reward is with You. In Jesus' name, amen."
When doing right costs me, I'm standing where the prophets stood. And God sees.
