Month 1: The Word Became Flesh · Loving Others

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 1:39-45

39 In those days Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah, 40 where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.”

Memory Verse

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Genesis 40-42

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 13 of 365 — Joseph rises in Egypt, and God's plan to save many lives unfolds.)

The Heart of It

Mary had just gotten the most amazing news of her life. She had every reason to think only about herself. She could have stayed home to worry and wonder. Instead, Luke tells us she got ready and hurried off to the hill country. She went to be with her older relative Elizabeth, who was also going to have a miracle baby. Mary had just received grace from God. Her first move was to go and give it away. Love does that. When God fills us with good news, the most natural thing is to carry it to someone who needs cheering up. And the visit blessed them both. The moment Mary arrived, baby John leaped for joy inside Elizabeth. Then Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke a blessing over Mary.

This is what loving others looks like in everyday life. We notice who might be lonely, or tired, or carrying something heavy. Then we go to them, in a hurry, before the moment slips away. Mary couldn't fix Elizabeth's situation. Elizabeth couldn't fix Mary's. But they could be together. They could cheer each other on and rejoice in what God was doing. We were never meant to walk with God alone. Some of the deepest joy in the Christian life comes when two people who love Jesus simply show up for each other.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Mary hurried to help her cousin Elizabeth. When we love others, we go and help them. We make them happy!

Let's do it: Name one person you can help today. Then go do one kind thing for them.

Middles 8–10

Mary had her own big news. But she still went to cheer up Elizabeth. Loving others means thinking of them, not just ourselves.

Let's talk: Who do you know that might be lonely or sad right now? How could we cheer them up this week?

Older 11–14

Grace received becomes grace given. God blessed Mary. Her first response was to hurry off and bless someone else.

Let's go deeper: What keeps you from hurrying to help others? Is it being too busy, or feeling shy, or just forgetting to notice?

Who in your life always seems happy to see you? How does it feel when someone goes out of their way just for you?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

The instant Mary arrived, the baby leaped inside Elizabeth (). Scripture calls that unborn child a baby who could feel joy. The Bible treats life in the womb as real, precious human life. God made that life, and God knows it (). That's why followers of Jesus love and protect the littlest ones among us.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Don't miss the social courage in this story. Mary was young, pregnant, and unmarried, and she traveled to the hill country anyway. She was stepping into a world that would not understand her. Yet she went to give and receive encouragement among the family of faith. There's a fatherly lesson here about building a home that goes to people. Hospitality and presence are caught more than they are taught. Your kids will learn to show up for the hurting if they watch you do it. Notice, too, the beautiful give-and-take. The older woman blesses the younger, and the younger one's arrival blesses the older. A healthy church and a healthy home both need the generations leaning toward each other. Ask yourself this week: who is my "Elizabeth"? Who is the person I should go to in a hurry? And am I teaching my children to notice the same?

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for friends and family who love You. Help us share Your goodness instead of keeping it to ourselves. Help us hurry to cheer others on. Make our home a place that loves the lonely and the hurting. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The grace I've received is meant to be carried. Today I can go and cheer someone on.
