Month 1: The Word Became Flesh · Family Worship

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 1:46-55

46 Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! 48 For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed. 49 For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful, 55 as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Memory Verse

For no word from God will ever fail.”Luke 1:37 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Genesis 43-46

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 14 of 365 — Joseph forgives his brothers; God meant it for good.)

The Heart of It

Today we worship along with Mary's song. It begins with God and it ends with God: "My soul magnifies the Lord." To magnify doesn't mean to make God bigger. He's already bigger than everything. It means to make Him look as big to our hearts as He truly is. It's like a telescope that helps us see what was always there. Mary sings about a God who notices the lowly. He fills the hungry. He lifts up the humble. He keeps the promises He made to His people long ago. Her whole heart turns into praise, because she has caught a glimpse of how great and how good her Savior is.

At the center of her song is a line worth tucking away as a family: "His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation." God's mercy is wide. It reaches all who will turn to Him and trust Him, one generation after another, including yours. That's the good news the whole month has been building toward. The Word became flesh so that mercy could come close. Tonight, as a family, let's not just study this. Let's do what Mary did. Let's lift our eyes off ourselves and off our worries. Let's look at how big and merciful God is. And let's sing.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Mary was so happy about God that she sang a song! God's love is HUGE, and it's for you.

Let's do it: Sing a favorite worship song together. Clap, dance, and smile big for God!

Middles 8–10

To "magnify" God means to make Him look as big to our hearts as He really is. Mary did that with a song of praise.

Let's talk: What's something God has done for our family that we can thank Him for right now?

Older 11–14

Mary's song echoes the whole Old Testament. She sings about a God who lifts up the humble and keeps His promises across the generations. His mercy is for all who fear Him.

Let's go deeper: "His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation." How could the way we worship now shape our family's faith for years to come?

If you wrote a short song about something God has done for you, what would the very first line be?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

"Isn't it proud to say God's mercy is for everyone who turns to Him?" Just the opposite. It's the humblest news there is. Mary sang that God lifts up the lowly, not the proud. His mercy is offered freely to all who will fear Him and trust Him (; ). No one is too small, and no one can earn it. We share that good news gently and gladly ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

"His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation" is a banner over family worship. God's covenant love flows down through families that revere Him. It doesn't happen automatically, as if grace were inherited like eye color. It happens genuinely, as each generation is invited to fear the Lord for themselves and responds in faith. You are a link in that chain tonight. Take the searching part seriously. Children rarely catch a wonder for God that their father does not actually feel. The Magnificat is a worshiping heart spilling over, and worship is the one thing in discipleship you cannot fake or hand off to someone else. So before you lead the song, let your own soul magnify the Lord. Tell your kids one specific thing God has done that still makes you marvel. That testimony, passed down generation to generation, may outlive everything else you give them.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, we praise You tonight. You are great, and You are merciful. Your love reaches every generation that loves You. Help our whole family love You and trust You. Thank You for sending Jesus to bring Your mercy close. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God's mercy is for all who fear Him, generation to generation. And our family gets to pass it on.
