Good Tidings of Great Joy
Month 1: The Word Became Flesh · Heart Matters
Today's Scripture
Read together: Luke 2:8–14
8 And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night. 9 Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord! 12 And this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!”

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Exodus 29–32
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 25 of 365 — even as Israel stumbles with the golden calf, God's mercy holds.)The Heart of It
The terrified shepherds heard the angel's first words: "Do not be afraid." Then came the reason. "I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people." Stop and feel how big that is. Not a little joy. Not joy for a special few. This is great joy, for all people. The deepest news in the whole universe is not bad news. It is good news. And it is full of joy. When God sent His Son, His heart toward us was overflowing gladness. It was not a grim duty.
Here is the Heart Matter for your family. Where do you go looking for joy? We chase it in presents, screens, treats, and praise. But those fade by morning. The joy the angel announced never runs out. It isn't about our circumstances. It's about a Person. Real, lasting joy is found in Jesus Himself. He is the Savior who came for us. A child who learns early that Jesus is the true source of joy carries something the world can never give and never take away. And notice this. The joy is "for all people." God loved the world so much that He holds the offer open to everyone. He holds it open to your neighbors and even to your enemies.
Around the Table
The angel said, "Don't be scared! I have happy news!" Jesus is the happiest news ever. And it's for everybody.
Let's do it: Make your biggest, brightest "happy news" face and shout, "Jesus is born!"
The angel brought "great joy… to all people." That joy isn't a toy or a treat. It's Jesus Himself.
Let's talk: What is something fun that made you happy for a little while, and then the happy wore off? How is joy in Jesus different?
The good news is for "all people." God's love and His offer of salvation are truly for everyone. They are not just for a special few. Joy that comes from our circumstances rises and falls. Joy that comes from Christ holds steady.
Let's go deeper: Where have you been hunting for joy lately? What might change if you went to Jesus first?

What's something that made you super happy, but the happy didn't last long?— Jesus is the joy that never wears out!
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Christianity is not a gloomy list of rules. Its very heart is an announcement of "good tidings of great joy." A faith that began with angels singing over a rescue is, at its root, good news for the whole world.
For Dad · Go Deeper
"Great joy… to all people" is the gospel in miniature. It answers a Calvinist mistake gently but firmly. The joy is announced for all. The offer is genuinely held out to everyone, because Christ died for all (). But the deeper challenge for you tonight is the joy itself. Children go sermon-deaf to the parent who preaches joy in Jesus while living visibly anxious, sour, or joyless. Where are you sourcing your gladness this week? In outcomes? In approval? In comfort? John Piper rightly says God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. Let your kids see a dad whose deepest happiness rests in Christ, not in a good day.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for the good news that brings great joy. Be our joy when things go well. Be our joy when things go hard. And help us share that joy with everyone we know. In Jesus' name, amen."
The deepest news in the universe is good news. And Jesus is a joy that never wears off.
