Simeon, Led by the Spirit

Month 1: The Word Became Flesh · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 2:25–32

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him what was customary under the Law, 28 Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, saying: 29 “Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, You now dismiss Your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation, 31 which You have prepared in the sight of all people, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”

Memory Verse

Today's reading: Exodus 33–35

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 26 of 365 — Moses asks to see God's glory, and the Lord shows His goodness.)

The Heart of It

Look how many times the Holy Spirit shows up in just a few verses about old Simeon. The Spirit was upon him. The Spirit revealed to him that he would see the Messiah before he died. And the Spirit led him into the temple at the exact moment Mary and Joseph carried in baby Jesus (). Simeon wasn't famous or powerful. He was simply a man who lived close to God and listened. And because he walked with the Spirit, he saw the Savior of the world in the arms of a poor young mother. Everyone else in the temple saw only another baby.

That is what walking in the Spirit looks like. It isn't loud or showy. It's a quiet life of waiting on God and being led by Him. That's how Simeon could see what others missed. The same Holy Spirit who guided Simeon lives in everyone who belongs to Jesus today (). He still whispers. He still nudges. He still leads us to the right place at the right time. We don't follow Jesus by our own cleverness or willpower. We follow by listening to His Spirit. And notice this. Simeon had waited years for this moment. Being led by the Spirit often means patient, faithful waiting. It isn't always instant excitement.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

God's Helper, the Holy Spirit, told old Simeon to go to the temple. And there was baby Jesus! Simeon was so happy he sang.

Let's do it: Hold your hands out like Simeon holding baby Jesus and say, "Thank You, God, for sending Jesus!"

Middles 8–10

The Holy Spirit led Simeon to the right place at the right time. The Spirit still helps God's people listen and follow today.

Let's talk: How do you think you could practice "listening" to God this week?

Older 11–14

Three times the Spirit works in Simeon. He came upon him. He revealed to him. And He led him. Spirit-led living is quiet faithfulness and patient waiting. It isn't hype or showiness.

Let's go deeper: Simeon waited years. How does patience fit with being led by the Spirit, instead of always chasing the dramatic?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Simeon, Anna, the shepherds, and later the wise men all recognized Jesus on their own. Different people. Different evidence. The same conclusion. When many witnesses point to the same truth, that is exactly the kind of testimony a careful person looks for.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Simeon is a portrait of Spirit-led living for the ordinary believer. He is not a prophet on a stage. He is a quiet man, "just and devout, waiting" (v. 25), tuned in enough to the Spirit's prompting to be in the right place at the right moment. This is the everyday Pentecostal life. It means being led, not driven. It means listening, not performing. And here's the heart-check for you, Dad. A busy, hurried, noisy life goes deaf to the Spirit's whisper. Simeon's secret was margin and devotion. Are there enough quiet, unhurried spaces in your week for God to actually lead you? Remember this too. Character matters more than gifting. The Spirit's leading grows a man more like Christ, never more impressed with himself.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, fill us with Your Holy Spirit, just as You filled Simeon. Help us listen. Help us wait patiently. Help us follow where You lead. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The same Spirit who led Simeon to Jesus lives in me. Today I will slow down and listen.
