I Will Send You a Helper
Month 10: The Upper Room · Bible Story
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 14:15-18
15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Malachi 1-4
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (The last words of the Old Testament before four silent centuries — then the promised Messenger comes.)The Heart of It
Picture the disciples in that upper room. Jesus has just washed their feet. He has told them He is leaving. Their hearts are heavy. How will they go on without Him? Right there, Jesus makes one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture: "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever" (). The Greek word for "another" means another of the same kind. It means One exactly like Jesus Himself. The Helper is not a force or a feeling. He is the Holy Spirit. He is God Himself, coming to live in them, not just beside them.
And notice how Jesus ends the promise. "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you" (v. 18). An orphan has no one to provide for him, protect him, or belong to. Jesus refuses to leave His friends that way. The Spirit He sends is His own presence with us always. This is the heart of the Christian life. We don't follow Jesus by gritting our teeth and trying harder on our own. We follow Him filled and carried by His Spirit. And did you catch how the promise begins? "If you love Me, keep My commandments" (v. 15). Love for Jesus and obedience to Jesus belong together. The Helper is the One who makes that love real and that obedience possible.
Around the Table
Jesus had to go back to heaven, but He promised His friends would never be alone. He sent the Holy Spirit to live right inside their hearts!
Let's do it: Put your hand on your heart and say, "Jesus, thank You that I am never alone."
Jesus called the Holy Spirit "another Helper." He is Someone just like Himself. The Spirit comforts us, teaches us, and helps us obey.
Let's talk: What is something hard you have tried to do all by yourself? How might it help to ask the Helper for strength?
Jesus says the world does not see the Spirit or know Him. But you do know Him, because He lives with you and will be in you. The Spirit is a Person we can know, not a power we use.
Let's go deeper: Jesus links loving Him with keeping His commands. Why do you think love and obedience can't really be separated?

Who is the first person you want when you're scared or sad? Jesus sent a Helper who is always there, closer than anyone.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some say the Holy Spirit is just a vague "energy." But Jesus calls Him "another Helper." He is a Person who can be grieved (), who teaches and speaks (). A force does not comfort orphans. A Person does. The Spirit is God Himself, here with us.

The word Jesus uses, paráklētos, means "one called alongside to help." He is a comforter, an advocate, and a counselor all at once. Notice that the Spirit was promised to all the disciples in that room, not to a spiritual elite. Classic Pentecostal teaching takes Jesus at His word. The indwelling presence of the Spirit is the birthright of every believer, and the Father delights to fill those who ask (). Here is the searching question for tonight. Are you leading your home in your own willpower, or in His power? You cannot give your children a felt confidence in a Helper you are not leaning on yourself. Before you sleep, ask the Father to fill you afresh.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that Jesus did not leave us alone. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, our Helper. Fill us again today. Help us love You and obey You. And remind us we are never alone. In Jesus' name, amen."
Jesus did not leave me an orphan. His own Spirit lives in me, always.
