From the Manger Toward the River: Looking Ahead
Month 1: The Word Became Flesh · Family Worship
Today's Scripture
Read together: Luke 2:39-52
39 When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the Child grew and became strong. He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him. 41 Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast. 43 When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed. 44 Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they could not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for Him. 46 Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers. 48 When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.” 49 “Why were you looking for Me?” He asked. “Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand the statement He was making to them. 51 Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured up all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Leviticus 6-8
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 30 of 365 — the priests are set apart to serve, pointing ahead to the great High Priest, Jesus.)The Heart of It
The manger isn't the end of the story. It's the doorway. Luke gives us one quiet window into Jesus' growing-up years. At twelve, He stays behind in Jerusalem. Mary and Joseph find Him in the temple, "both listening to them and asking them questions" (). When His worried mother finds Him, He gently answers, "Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" (). Even as a boy, Jesus knew who His true Father was and why He had come. Then Luke tells us something tender and true: "Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men" (). The Son of God really lived a human childhood. He grew. He learned. He obeyed His parents (). The eternal Word did not skip a single ordinary year.
As we close this first month, we stand with that boy in the temple and look up the road. The babe of Bethlehem grew into the man who would one day walk to the Jordan River to be baptized. From there He would step into His great work of teaching, healing, and finally laying down His life to save us. Think of everything we celebrated this month. Gabriel's announcement. Mary's brave "yes." The name Jesus, which means "the Lord saves." The angels' song. The shepherds' joy. All of it was God keeping His promises, right on time. The same God who finished what He started in the manger will finish what He starts in us, as we keep walking with Him (). Next month the story moves on. It moves toward the river, and toward the voice of the Father saying, "This is My beloved Son." And we get a front-row seat. So tonight we worship the God who keeps His word. And we say together: keep leading us, Lord. We want to follow.
Around the Table
Baby Jesus grew up just like you are growing. He got bigger and wiser every year! And He always loved His real Father, God.
Let's do it: Stand up tall and stretch high. Say, "Jesus grew up, and I'm growing too, to love and follow Him!"
When Jesus was a boy, He wanted to be in His Father's house, learning and asking questions. He grew "in favor with God and men."
Let's talk: What is one way you'd like to grow this year? It could be in your body, your wisdom, or your love for God.
Jesus truly grew and learned as a human (), while never stopping being God. Month 1 ends at the manger. Next month moves toward His baptism and His ministry.
Let's go deeper: God kept every promise about Jesus' coming, right on time. How does His track record help you trust Him with the things you're waiting on?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
Skeptics sometimes say the Gospel writers ignored Jesus' childhood, as if they were making things up. But Luke includes this small, very human scene. A boy stays behind and worries His parents. That is exactly the kind of honest, unflattering detail invented legends leave out. When someone asks why we trust these accounts, we can answer with gentleness and confidence. They read like remembered history, not myth ().

Notice what Jesus' boyhood quietly dignifies: ordinary growth. He "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men" (). Those are the same four areas you are stewarding in each of your children right now: mental, physical, spiritual, and social. The incarnation didn't bypass childhood. The Son of God walked the slow road of growing up under parents who taught Him. That should steady you. The unhurried, repetitive work of raising disciples is holy work. Answering the same questions. Leading worship on a tired Tuesday. Watching for slow growth in "favor with God and men." Jesus Himself made that work holy by living it. You've finished a month. Don't measure it by how polished the evenings were. Measure it by the simple faithfulness of showing up. Keep going.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that Jesus did everything You sent Him to do. You keep every promise. Lead our family on. We want to keep following Jesus wherever You take us. In Jesus' name, amen."
God kept every promise in the manger. And He will finish what He started in me as I keep following Jesus.
