Today's Scripture

Read together: Matthew 3:1-6

1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’” 4 John wore a garment of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region around the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

Today's reading: Leviticus 9-11

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Day 31 of 365 — the priests begin their ministry as Israel learns what is clean and unclean.)

The Heart of It

For four hundred years, no prophet had spoken in Israel. Then a rugged man in camel's hair stepped out of the wilderness near the Jordan River. And the whole region came to hear him. John the Baptist's message was short and electric: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" He wasn't the King. He was the herald. He was the voice running ahead to announce that the King was almost here. People felt the truth of it. They confessed their sins. And they were baptized in the river as a sign that they wanted clean hearts to greet Him.

Notice where God chose to start. Not in a palace. Not in a temple. He started in a wilderness, through a man who pointed away from himself. That's how God still works. Before Jesus steps fully into our lives, something inside us has to make room. There has to be a turning, a getting-ready, an honest "I need You." John teaches us that the best thing any person can ever do is clear the path and say, "Get ready! Jesus is coming." This week the King steps forward. And it begins with a voice telling us to make Him welcome.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

A man named John lived in the desert. He told everyone, "Get ready! Jesus is coming!" He helped people get their hearts ready.

Let's do it: Pretend you're getting ready for a special guest. Tidy one thing and say, "Get ready, Jesus is coming!"

Middles 8–10

John didn't talk about himself. He talked about Jesus. What do you think it means to "make a path ready" in your heart?

Let's talk: What's one thing you'd want to clean up or change if Jesus were coming to visit tomorrow?

Older 11–14

John's job was to herald the King. He announced Him and then stepped aside. Repentance means turning around to face God. It is not just feeling sorry.

Let's go deeper: Why do you think God prepared people's hearts before Jesus began His ministry, instead of just sending Him straight in?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

John the Baptist is mentioned in the Gospels. But he is also mentioned by the first-century Jewish historian Josephus. Josephus describes him as a real preacher who baptized crowds. Skeptics sometimes claim the Gospel figures are made up. But here even a non-Christian source outside the Bible confirms that John was a true person in history.

For Dad · Go Deeper

John's whole ministry was preparation. And that is your calling in this season too. You are not the King. You are the voice that gets little hearts ready to meet Him. That's freeing. You don't have to manufacture the conversion of your children. You only have to faithfully announce, "Get ready, Jesus is coming," and to model the turning yourself. Repentance isn't a one-time event we leave behind at salvation. It is the posture of a follower's whole life, a daily clearing of the path. So ask yourself tonight what underbrush has grown up across the road in your own heart this week. And let John's blunt honesty call you back.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for sending John to get people ready for Jesus. Help our family turn toward You. Help us make room in our hearts for the King. Prepare the way in us today. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

The best thing I can do is get ready and point others to Jesus.
