The Heart of It

When Jesus came up out of the Jordan, heaven itself opened. And the Father spoke out loud for everyone to hear: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Stop and let that land. Jesus had not yet preached a single sermon. He had not yet healed a single person. He had not yet gone to the cross. And already the Father announced His delight in Him. The love came first. Jesus was already beloved, already pleasing, before He had "done" anything in public ministry at all.

That's a stunning picture of how God's love works. And it's the perfect verse to hide in our hearts this week. We so easily believe we'll be loved if we perform well enough. But the Father's voice over Jesus reminds us of something different. Love isn't earned by achievement. It's given through relationship. And here's the beautiful part. Everyone who is joined to Jesus by faith is wrapped up in that same love. When the Father looks at His children who trust His Son, He is pleased. So let's memorize this verse, not just with our mouths but with our hearts.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

When Jesus came out of the water, God said in a big voice, "This is My Son, and I love Him!" God loves Jesus. And He loves you.

Let's do it: Say the verse together three times, and on "well pleased," give a big happy smile.

Middles 8–10

God said He loved Jesus before Jesus had done His big works. What does that teach us about why God loves us?

Let's talk: Do you ever feel like you have to "earn" being loved? How does this verse help?

Older 11–14

All three Persons of God are here at once. The Father is speaking. The Son is in the water. The Spirit is descending. As you memorize the verse, notice the order. Being loved comes before ministry.

Let's go deeper: How would your week change if you really believed God delighted in you, instead of just tolerating you?

What's something someone said about you that made you feel truly loved — not for what you did, but for who you are?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say the idea of God as Father, Son, and Spirit was invented later. Yet here in one of the earliest Gospel scenes, all three appear together at the Jordan. The Trinity isn't a clever theory bolted on later. It's woven right into the story of Jesus' baptism.

For Dad · Go Deeper

There is a fatherhood lesson buried in this verse that can reshape your home. The Father affirmed His Son's identity before His Son's activity. "You are loved" came before "Now go and work." Many of us reverse that with our kids. We attach our warmth to their performance, and they learn to chase approval instead of resting in belonging. This week, let your children hear delight from you that is not tied to grades, or chores, or behavior. Let them hear a steady "I'm so glad you're mine" that echoes the Father's voice. They will hear the gospel more clearly when your love sounds like His.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that You spoke love over Jesus. And because of Him, You speak that same love over us. Help us believe we are Your beloved children. And help us love each other that same way. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

I am loved by the Father before I ever do a thing, because I belong to His beloved Son.
