Our Hearts Burned Within Us

Month 12: Risen & Sending · Memory Verse

Today's Scripture

Read together: Luke 24:28-35

28 As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther. 29 But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together 34 and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.

Today's reading: Ephesians 5-6; Philippians 1-2

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Walk in love, put on God's armor, and let the mind of humble, self-giving Christ be in you.)

The Heart of It

When the two disciples reached Emmaus, Jesus acted as if He would walk on farther. But they begged Him, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening." So He stayed. At the table He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. And in that moment, "their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight" (). Then came the line we are hiding in our hearts this week: "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" They had felt something real while He taught them. A holy warmth. And this was even before they understood who He was. The Word of God, opened by Jesus, sets the heart on fire.

That burning heart is worth chasing. It is not hype. It is not a worked-up feeling. It is what happens when the truth about Jesus lands on a heart that is paying attention. And look what that warmth produced. The two of them got up "that very hour." They walked seven dark miles back to Jerusalem to tell the others, "The Lord is risen indeed!" A burning heart does not stay seated. It runs to tell. This is exactly why we memorize Scripture as a family. We are filling our hearts with the kindling that Jesus loves to set ablaze. So say the verse together a few times tonight, and ask the Lord to make your hearts burn.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

When Jesus talked about God's Word, the friends' hearts felt warm and happy inside — like a cozy fire! God's Word makes our hearts glad.

Let's do it: Put your hand on your heart and say the verse: "Did not our heart burn within us…" Then smile big!

Middles 8–10

The friends felt their hearts "burn" while Jesus opened the Bible. Then they ran to tell everyone the good news.

Let's talk: What part of God's Word has made your heart feel happy or excited?

Older 11–14

The "burning heart" came from the Word, not from a worked-up feeling. And it moved them to act. Real meetings with Jesus lead us to obey and to tell others.

Let's go deeper: How can you tell the difference between a true work of the Spirit in your heart and just being emotionally hyped?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

The disciples recognized Jesus "in the breaking of bread." That is a small, ordinary, human detail no inventor would add. Eyewitness accounts are full of specifics like this. Made-up legends stay vague ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

There is a quiet warning and a great encouragement tucked into this passage for fathers. First the warning. The disciples' hearts were burning before their eyes were opened. Feelings can run ahead of understanding, so we never base faith on warmth alone. Now the encouragement. God genuinely does move on hearts through His Word. When you lead family devotions, you are not just handing over information. You are laying kindling and praying for fire. So don't be discouraged on the nights it feels flat. The disciples didn't know their hearts were burning until afterward, looking back. Much of the spiritual work in your children is happening below the surface, on roads you cannot see. You may only recognize the fire in hindsight. So keep opening the Scriptures. The risen Jesus still warms hearts through them.

Let's Pray Together

"Lord Jesus, open the Scriptures to us and make our hearts burn within us. Don't let us just feel something and sit still — send us out to tell others, 'The Lord is risen indeed!' In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God's Word, opened by Jesus, sets the heart on fire. And a burning heart gets up to tell.
