Turning Around to Make Room for the King
Month 2: The King Steps Forward · Heart Matters
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 3:7-10
7 But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his place of baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
Memory Verse
“And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!””— Matthew 3:17 (BSB)

Today's reading: Leviticus 19-21
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Day 34 of 365 — "You shall be holy, for I am holy" — God calls His people to hearts that match His.)The Heart of It
Some religious leaders came out to John's baptism. But he could see they wanted the ceremony without the change. So he spoke straight: "Bear fruits worthy of repentance." Real turning isn't just feeling bad or doing a religious action. It shows up in fruit. It shows up in a changed life. The leaders were trusting in their family tree. "We have Abraham as our father," they said. But John told them God isn't impressed by labels. He wants hearts that actually turn around to make room for the King.
This is "heart matters" at its core. Repentance means doing a U-turn. I was walking my way, and now I turn to walk God's way. It's not punishment. It's the door that lets the King come in. And notice this. It's something we choose. John called people to respond. He didn't say their choices didn't count. God's grace reaches out to everyone. But each of us has to answer it with a real turning. A heart with no room for Jesus stays full of itself. A heart that repents clears space, and the King gladly walks in. That choice is in front of every member of our family today.
Around the Table
"Repent" means turning around! If you're walking the wrong way, you stop and turn to go God's way.
Let's do it: Walk one direction. Then on "Turn to Jesus!" spin around and walk the other way.
John said being part of a religious family isn't enough. God wants a changed heart. What's the difference between saying sorry and living differently?
Let's talk: What's one habit you'd like to "turn around" this week?
Repentance is a real choice we make in response to God's grace. We turn from our own way to His. "Fruit" proves the turn was real ().
Let's go deeper: Why isn't feeling guilty the same as repenting? What does true repentance actually do?

Have you ever been walking or driving the wrong way and had to turn completely around? How did you realize you were going wrong?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some claim Christianity teaches that you're saved automatically by being born into the right family or church. But John flatly rejected that. "Do not think to say... 'We have Abraham as our father.'" From the very start, the faith calls for a personal turning to God, not an inherited status. Each person must respond.

John's words guard us against a quiet danger in Christian homes. It is the danger of raising children who can perform the forms of faith without ever personally turning to Christ. They can say the prayers, the verses, and show up for church. We cannot hand salvation to our kids like a family heirloom. Grace genuinely calls for each one's free response. This should make us prayerful, not anxious. Our job is to keep the gospel warm and clear. Our job is to model real repentance ourselves. Let them see you turn around and apologize. And our job is to invite that yes, never to manufacture it. The fruit John looked for grows in soil that has been honestly tilled. That includes the soil of a father's own repentant heart.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, we don't want to just go through the motions. Give us hearts that really turn to You. Make room in us for King Jesus. And grow real fruit in our lives. In Jesus' name, amen."
Repentance is a U-turn that makes room for the King. And it's a choice I get to make today.
