The Dove Comes Down
Month 2: The King Steps Forward · Walking in the Spirit
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 3:11, 16
11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me will come One more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. … 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him.
Memory Verse
“And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!””— Matthew 3:17 (BSB)

Today's reading: Leviticus 22-24
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Day 35 of 365 — God's feasts and lamps kept burning point to His abiding presence among His people.)The Heart of It
John baptized with water. But he kept pointing past himself to Someone greater: "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (). Then Jesus came up out of the river. The heavens opened, and "the Spirit of God [descended] like a dove" and rested on Him. The Spirit didn't just touch Jesus and leave. He came to rest. He came to stay. Jesus, the King, would do everything in the power of the Holy Spirit. And that is the pattern He sets for everyone who follows Him.
This is the heart of walking in the Spirit. We were never meant to live the Christian life on our own batteries. The Spirit came down on Jesus at the start of His ministry. And Jesus pours out that same Spirit on His people, to fill us, change us, and give us power. The dove shows us the gentleness of the Spirit. He doesn't bully His way in. He comes to those who welcome Him. And the "fire" shows us His power to make us clean and to send us out. After we belong to Jesus, He longs to fill us with His Spirit. That gift is for moms and dads and children alike. We only need to ask ().
Around the Table
When Jesus came out of the water, God's Spirit came down gentle like a dove and rested on Him. The Holy Spirit is God's helper. And Jesus shares Him with us!
Let's do it: Flutter your hands down softly like a dove landing, and whisper, "Come, Holy Spirit, help me."
John said Jesus would baptize people with the Holy Spirit. Why do you think we can't live for God using only our own strength?
Let's talk: When have you needed help being brave or kind? That's a great time to ask the Spirit.
The Spirit gave power even to Jesus' ministry. After salvation, Jesus wants to fill believers with the Holy Spirit. That brings power for witness and for a holy life ().
Let's go deeper: Have you ever asked Jesus to fill you with His Spirit? The Father loves to give the Spirit to those who ask ().

When have you tried to do something hard all by yourself, then realized it went so much better with help?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some imagine the Holy Spirit is just an energy or a feeling. But Scripture shows Him as a Person. He descends. He rests. He teaches. He can be welcomed or grieved (). At Jesus' baptism the Spirit appears alongside the Father and the Son. He is fully God and fully personal.

Classic Pentecostal teaching sees the Spirit's descent on Jesus as the prototype. The King launches His mission filled and empowered. And He invites His followers into the same Spirit-empowered life. But notice the order and the spirit of it. It comes as a gentle dove, not a spectacle. It brings rest and abiding, not hype. The aim is never gifts for display or some prosperity payoff. The aim is Christlikeness and power for mission, with character always outweighing gifting. Here is the searching question for tonight. Are you leading your family in your own willpower, or in the Spirit? You cannot give your children a Spirit-filled life you are not living. So before you teach this, kneel and ask the Father to fill you afresh.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for Your Holy Spirit. He rested on Jesus, and now He lives in us. Fill our family with Your Spirit. Make us gentle. Make us holy. Make us brave. In Jesus' name, amen."
The same Spirit who rested on Jesus is the Helper I can welcome today.
