Father, Son, and Spirit at the River
Month 2: The King Steps Forward · Family Worship
Today's Scripture
Read together: Matthew 3:13-17
13 At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 “Let it be so now,” Jesus replied. “It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.” Then John permitted Him. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
Memory Verse
“And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!””— Matthew 3:17 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Numbers 1-4
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Day 37 of 365 — Israel is counted and arranged; God brings order to His people on the move.)The Heart of It
Tonight we worship by gathering up the whole week's story at one riverbank. Jesus came to John to be baptized. John protested. "I need to be baptized by You!" But Jesus insisted. He said it was right, "to fulfill all righteousness." Why would the sinless King step into a baptism of repentance? Because from the very start, He was stepping in with us. He was joining Himself to the very people He came to save. And then came one breathtaking moment. All three Persons of God appeared together. The Son rose up from the water. The Spirit came down like a dove. And the Father's voice spoke from heaven: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
This is one of the clearest pictures in all the Bible of who God is. He is one God, forever Father, Son, and Spirit. It is also a tiny picture of the whole gospel. The Father loves. The Son obeys and stands with us. The Spirit gives power. As a family, let's let this whole scene lead us into worship. The King has stepped forward. He came down to where we are. The heavens opened, and love thundered from the sky. That is the God we get to worship together tonight. And He is the God who, in Jesus, calls each of us His own.
Around the Table
At the river you can see all of God at once. Jesus is in the water. The Spirit comes like a dove. And the Father's voice says from the sky, "I love My Son!"
Let's do it: Make three motions together. Point down for Jesus in the water. Flutter your hands for the dove. Cup your ears for the Father's voice. Then say the memory verse.
Jesus didn't need to repent. But He was baptized to stand with us. The Father, Son, and Spirit are all right here together.
Let's talk: What's one thing about Jesus this week that makes you want to praise Him?
This scene shows us the Trinity. God is one God in three Persons. It also shows the gospel pattern. The Father sends and delights. The Son joins Himself to sinners. The Spirit gives power.
Let's go deeper: Why does it matter that the sinless King chose to be baptized right alongside sinners? What does that tell you about how far He will come to be with you?

If your family could pick one song to sing loudly tonight to thank Jesus for stepping forward, what would it be?— Then sing it!
🛡️ Defending the Faith
People sometimes say the Trinity makes no sense. They call it "three gods," or "one God wearing masks." But neither one is what Christians believe. We believe in one God who has always lived as three distinct Persons. That is exactly what we see at the Jordan River. The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are all there together, yet they are still one God.
For Dad · Go Deeper
Family worship doesn't require a stage or a band. It requires a father willing to gather his people around the King. Tonight's text gives you a rich anchor for worship: the triune God revealed in a single, glorious moment. Lead your family to respond, not just to learn. Sing the memory verse. Pray it back. Let the kids name their own reasons to praise. And take heart from Jesus' baptism in your own walk with Him. The King did not stay distant. He came down into the water with sinners. The God you are leading your family to worship is not a far-off deity. He is the One who steps forward, stands with us, and speaks love over His children. Worship flows naturally when we remember how close He came.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, You are one God, full of glory. We worship You tonight. Thank You that the King stepped forward and came down to be with us. Please make our home a place of worship. In Jesus' name, amen."
Father, Son, and Spirit. One glorious God who stepped forward to be with us. He is worthy of our worship.
