Read together: Matthew 4:1–4

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. 3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Today's reading: Numbers 5–7

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 38 of 365 — Israel orders its camp and brings its gifts to the Lord.)

The Heart of It

Right after the Father said, "This is My beloved Son," something surprising happened. The very same Spirit who had rested on Jesus like a dove led Him out into the lonely wilderness. There Jesus went forty days without food. At His weakest, hungriest moment, the devil came at Him. "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." It was a real temptation. Jesus truly was hungry. And He truly could have made bread. Notice when the test came. It did not come after Jesus failed. It came right on the heels of His greatest blessing. The enemy loves to strike when we are tired and alone. He loves to whisper, "Did God really say…?" ().

But Jesus did not answer with His own clever words. He reached for Scripture. "It is written…" He quoted . Those were words God had given Israel in their wilderness long before. Adam fell in a garden full of food. Israel grumbled in the desert. But Jesus stood firm on an empty stomach. He fully trusted that His Father's word is needed even more than bread. This is the King stepping forward. He came not with a sword but with truth. He shows us how to beat temptation. We don't argue with it. We feed on what God has actually said.

Around the Table

Littles 4–7

Jesus was very hungry, but He still obeyed God. When the bad voice tried to trick Him, Jesus said God's words instead.

Let's do it: Pat your tummy and say, "I need God's words even more than I need a snack!"

Middles 8–10

The devil tempted Jesus when He was tired and hungry. That was the hardest moment of all. So Jesus fought back by remembering Scripture.

Let's talk: When are you most likely to be grumpy or to disobey? Is it when you're tired? Hungry? Bored? How could knowing a Bible verse help you right then?

Older 11–14

Jesus is the second Adam. He succeeded in the very place Adam and Israel failed. He leaned fully on God's word instead of His own power.

Let's go deeper: Jesus had the power to make bread. Why do you think He chose to obey instead of using His power to meet His own need?

What's the hardest thing to do when you're really, really hungry? Is it being patient, being kind, or just waiting?Even Jesus got hungry. And He still trusted God.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some say Jesus only "seemed" human and could not really be tempted. But the Gospels show us a Savior who got truly hungry, tired, and tested (). And He still never sinned. A Jesus who never truly faced temptation could not truly help us when we face it ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

The wilderness wasn't a detour from Jesus' mission. The Spirit led Him there (). God sometimes allows His beloved children into hard, hungry seasons. He does it not because He is absent but because He is forging something. Your own "wilderness" stretches may be exactly where the Father is building your trust. Maybe it's tight finances, a draining job, or a season of small obedience no one sees. In those places He is teaching you to lean on His word more than on your circumstances. Dad, your kids are watching how you act when you're worn down. The man who meets his own hunger and frustration with "It is written" instead of self-pity is teaching his family more than any lesson could. Hide the word in your heart now, so it's on your lips when the test comes.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that Jesus faced real temptation. He stood firm for us. When we are tired and tempted, help us reach for Your word instead of our own way. Fill us with Your Spirit so we can stand. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God's word feeds me deeper than any meal. I will reach for it when I'm tested.
