Joy The Spirit Gives

Today's Scripture
Read together: Galatians 5:22-23 & Romans 14:17

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. — Romans 14:17
Memory Verse
“Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”— Habakkuk 3:17-18 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: 2 Samuel 5-8
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (David becomes king and God promises him an everlasting kingdom.)The Heart of It
Yesterday we saw Habakkuk rejoice in an empty field. Today we learn his secret. How can a person have joy when the figs don't blossom? Where does that kind of unshakeable joy even come from? The Bible gives a clear answer. Joy is fruit of the Spirit (). It grows in us as the Holy Spirit lives in us. You can't squeeze joy out of yourself by trying harder. You can't squeeze an apple out of a stick, either. Joy grows when you're connected to the Spirit of God. It's the way an apple grows on a branch connected to the tree.
This means Christian joy is not the same as the world's happiness. The world says, "Get more stuff, win more games, and then you'll be happy." But says God's kingdom "is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." That's a joy that good stuff can't give and bad days can't take. It comes from the Spirit who lives inside you and never leaves. So when life gets hard, you don't have to fake a smile or pretend everything's fine. You can simply ask, "Holy Spirit, grow Your joy in me right now." That's not a trick. It's not a feeling you work up. It's a gift you receive. And here's something wonderful to remember. This is a gift God offers to all who come to Him. The Spirit who carried Habakkuk is offered freely to you.
Around the Table
Real joy is a gift the Holy Spirit grows in our hearts, like fruit on a tree! We can ask Him for it any time.
Let's do it: Cup your hands like you're holding fruit and pray, "Holy Spirit, grow Your joy in me!"
Joy is "fruit of the Spirit." It grows from being connected to God. It doesn't come from getting everything we want.
Let's talk: What's the difference between joy that comes from the Holy Spirit and happiness that comes from getting a treat?
The world chases happiness through circumstances. But the Spirit grows a deeper joy in us. It lasts, because it comes from God inside us, not from things around us.
Let's go deeper: If joy is fruit the Spirit grows, what's our part? How do we stay "connected to the branch"?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
Sometimes people say, "Christians are just naturally cheerful people." Explain that our joy isn't a personality type. It's fruit the Holy Spirit grows in anyone who trusts Jesus, even shy or sad people. A joy that survives hard times points to a real, living God. We share it gently, "with gentleness and respect" ().
For Dad · Go Deeper
It's worth being clear with your kids about what Spirit-given joy is not. It is not the hyped-up, name-it-claim-it positivity that promises constant good feelings if you just have enough faith. That's a counterfeit, and it crumbles the first time the figs don't blossom. Real fruit of the Spirit grows quietly, often in suffering, and looks like a settled gladness in God Himself. As classic Pentecostal teaching reminds us, the Spirit's work is meant to make us more like Christ, not to make us feel constantly upbeat. Character over feeling, every time. The most credible thing you can show your children is joy in God that doesn't depend on your circumstances cooperating.

Let's Pray Together
"Holy Spirit, thank You that joy is Your gift. We don't have to work it up on our own. Grow Your joy in our family. Give us a joy that holds steady when life is hard. Keep us close to You. In Jesus' name, amen."
Joy isn't something I squeeze out of myself. It's fruit the Spirit grows in me.
