Hope For The Discouraged

Month 6: Hard Questions · Loving Others

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

Memory Verse

Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!Habakkuk 3:17-18 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: 2 Samuel 9-12

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (David's kindness to Mephibosheth, and his great failure and repentance.)

The Heart of It

Paul calls God "the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation" (). "Comfort" here doesn't just mean a soft pillow and a snack. It means coming alongside someone to give them strength and hope. And then Paul says something we shouldn't miss. God comforts us "that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." Did you catch the chain? God comforts you so that you can pass that comfort on to someone else. The hard things you've been through aren't wasted. God can turn them into a gift you give to a discouraged friend.

This is one of the most beautiful ways we live "on mission" right where we are. Maybe you've been sad, and God carried you through. Now you know how to sit with another sad person and say, "I've felt that too. And God helped me. He can help you." You don't have to fix their problem or have perfect words. Often the most loving thing is simply to show up, listen, and remind them they're not alone. Think of a discouraged friend at school. A cousin going through a hard week. A grandparent who's lonely. These are people Jesus loves, and He wants to comfort them through you. That's how His comfort keeps flowing. It goes from God, to you, to the next hurting heart.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

When God makes us feel better, He wants us to help someone else feel better too! That's how His love gets passed around.

Let's do it: Think of one person who seems sad. Make them a little card or give them a hug tomorrow.

Middles 9–11

God comforts us so that we can comfort others. The hard things you've been through can help you help a friend.

Let's talk: When have you been sad, and someone made you feel less alone? How could you do that for someone this week?

Older 12–15

Comfort received is meant to become comfort given (2 Cor. 1:4). Your past struggles can become real understanding and compassion. That's a quiet, powerful way to show others Jesus is real.

Let's go deeper: Is there a hard thing you've walked through that could actually equip you to help someone else? How?

💬 Conversation Starter

Who do you know that might be discouraged right now? What's one small thing you could do to remind them they're not alone?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Sometimes people say, "Christianity doesn't actually help real, hurting people." Let your kindness be the evidence. When a believer sits with the discouraged and shares the comfort they've received from God, it shows the gospel is real, not just talked about. We comfort others "with gentleness and respect" (). We let love open the door for hope.

For Dad · Go Deeper

There's a temptation, especially among men, to skip past your own hard seasons quickly and never speak of them. But Paul suggests that the comfort God gave you in your trouble is precisely the equipment you have to help others. That includes your children. Let your kids see, in age-appropriate ways, that you've struggled, that you've been discouraged, and that God met you there. That gives them a roadmap for their own future valleys. It also teaches them that ministry isn't a stage. It's showing up for one hurting person at a time. Comfort is rarely about having answers. It's about presence. Model that, and your kids will become the friend others run to in the dark.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, You are the God of all comfort. Thank You for carrying our family through hard things. Help us pass that comfort on to someone else. Help us be the friend who shows up and listens. And help us point them to You. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God comforts me so I can comfort someone else. His love is meant to keep flowing.
