The Spirit Guides Us Into Truth

Month 8: Right & Wrong · Walking in the Spirit

⏱ ≈ 13 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: John 16:13

13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

Memory Verse

He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?Micah 6:8 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Job 9-12

Job longs for someone to help him understand God's ways. We have what Job longed for — the Spirit who guides us into truth.

The Heart of It

We've been learning that God has shown us what is good. But here's a question. Even when we know the right thing, why is it still so hard to actually do it? And how do we know the right thing in tricky moments the Bible doesn't spell out exactly? Jesus gave the answer the night before He died. He promised, "When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth" (). God didn't just hand us a rulebook and walk away. He gave us His Holy Spirit to live inside everyone who belongs to Jesus. The Spirit is a Helper. He guides us, reminds us of God's Word, and gives us power to obey it.

This is the difference between trying to be good on our own willpower and walking in the Spirit. On our own, knowing the right thing and doing it are two very different battles. But the Spirit works gently inside us. He nudges our conscience. He brings a verse to mind. He gives us a quiet "no" before a wrong choice. And He gives us a gentle "go on, do the kind thing." He never forces us. We can choose to listen or to ignore Him. So the wise thing is to ask Him and pay attention. Before a hard choice, you can pray, "Holy Spirit, guide me into what is true and good right now." That's not just for grown-ups or pastors. It's for you, today, at your age, in your real life.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

The Holy Spirit is God's Helper inside everyone who loves Jesus. He helps us know the good thing AND helps us do it!

Let's do it: Whisper a prayer with your hand on your heart: "Holy Spirit, help me do the good thing today."

Middles 9–11

Knowing what's right is one thing. Doing it is another. The Spirit of truth guides us and gives us strength to obey. But we still have to choose to listen.

Let's talk: When have you felt a quiet "don't do that" or "go be kind" inside? That may have been the Spirit guiding you.

Older 12–15

The Spirit guides us into truth, but never against Scripture. He always agrees with God's written Word, because He inspired it. He convicts and leads gently. We can grieve Him, or we can follow Him.

Let's go deeper: How can you tell the difference between the Spirit guiding you and just your own wishes or feelings? (Hint: the Spirit will never lead you against the Bible.)

What's a decision coming up this week where you'd love some help knowing the right thing to do? Let's ask the Holy Spirit about it together right now.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Someone might ask, "How can you really know what's true?" We can answer with humility and joy. God hasn't left us guessing. He gave His Spirit to guide His people into truth (), always in line with His Word. We don't claim to be smarter than anyone. We just say we have a Helper, and we offer Him gently ().

A purely intellectual apologetics is all arguments and no Spirit, and it produces children who can win debates but may not love Jesus. Classic Pentecostal teaching holds the two together. We make a reasoned case for the faith, and we also depend on the Spirit of truth to do what no argument can. He opens hearts and empowers obedient lives. Jesus' promise in is for ordinary believers, your kids included. So as you teach them to think well, also teach them to pray and listen. Build the habit out loud. Before decisions, ask the Spirit's guidance as a family. And remember Sam Storms' steady reminder that character matters more than gifting. The proof the Spirit is leading isn't dramatic experiences. It's a life increasingly shaped like Jesus. Lead from a Spirit-filled walk of your own, not just from information.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit, our Helper. Spirit of truth, guide us into what is good and true. Give us the power to do it. We want to walk with You, not on our own strength. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God didn't just show me what's good and leave. His Spirit lives in me to guide me into truth.
