Ezra Read The Word Aloud

Month 1: Why We Trust the Bible · Bible Story

Today's Scripture

Read together: Nehemiah 8:1-8

1 At that time all the people gathered together in the square before the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel. 2 On the first day of the seventh month, Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could listen and understand. 3 So Ezra read it aloud from daybreak until noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate, in front of the men and women and those who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. 4 Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for this occasion. At his right side stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, and at his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people, since he was standing above them all, and as he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and with their hands uplifted, all the people said, “Amen, Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law as they stood in their places. 8 So they read from the Book of the Law of God, explaining it and giving insight, so that the people could understand what was being read.

Memory Verse

This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do.Joshua 1:8 (BSB)memorize this week

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: John 1-4

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (We begin John's Gospel — "In the beginning was the Word.")

The Heart of It

Picture a huge crowd standing in an open square from early morning until midday. There were men, women, and every child old enough to understand (). They had just come home from years in a faraway land, and many of them had never really heard God's Word read out loud. So Ezra the scribe climbed up on a wooden platform, opened the scroll, and read. When he opened it, all the people stood up. They had waited a long time for this, and they treated God's Word like the treasure it is.

But Ezra and the Levites did more than read. "They gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading" (). That's a beautiful picture of what families can do today. God's Word is not a locked-up secret book for experts only. It's meant to be read aloud, explained simply, and understood by ordinary people, even kids. The crowd that day laughed and cried and worshiped because they finally got it. When we read the Bible together and help each other understand it, we're doing the very thing God's people have done for thousands of years.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

A man named Ezra read God's Word out loud to a big crowd, and everyone listened so carefully, even the kids!

Let's do it: Stand up tall like the crowd did, then have someone read one Bible verse aloud while everyone listens.

Middles 9–11

Ezra didn't just read. Helpers explained what it meant so everyone understood. God wants us to understand His Word, not just hear words go by.

Let's talk: When you read a Bible verse you don't understand, who could help you figure out what it means?

Older 12–15

This is one of the oldest pictures of public Bible reading and teaching. The people had been away from God's Word, and it showed in their lives. Hearing and understanding it changed them.

Let's go deeper: Why do you think understanding the Bible matters as much as just owning one or hearing it?

💬 Conversation Starter

What's the longest you've ever stood still and listened to something? The crowd stood from morning till noon to hear God's Word. What made it worth it?

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Some people imagine the Bible was kept hidden from regular folks. But scenes like show God's Word was meant to be read out loud to everyone, kids included. When someone says the Bible is "too confusing to understand," you can answer kindly. It was written to be explained and understood, and that's exactly why God gave teachers and families to help. We say it always with respect ().

Notice the order in . They read the text, gave the sense, and helped the people understand. Then the people responded with worship and tears (v. 9). Understanding came before emotion, and obedience followed both. You are the Ezra on the platform in your home. You don't need a seminary degree. You need a humble willingness to read the text plainly, explain what it means, and trust the Spirit to do the heart-work He did in that square. The goal isn't to impress your kids with how much you know. It's to hand them a Book they can read and understand for themselves. Start small, read aloud, and explain in their language.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for giving us Your Word. Thank You for helping us understand it. Give our family hungry hearts and open ears. Help us read it, understand it, and love it. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

God's Word was made to be read out loud and understood, even by me.
