“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””— Acts 1:8 (BSB)memorize this week
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Psalms 61-63
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 242 of 365 — David's soul thirsting for God in the wilderness.)The Heart of It
Today we slow down and tuck this verse deep into our hearts. Let's look at it in two halves. The first half is a promise. It says, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you." Notice it doesn't say "you must make your own power." God gives it. The second half is a purpose. It says, "and you shall be witnesses to Me." The power and the purpose belong together, like a battery and a flashlight. A battery sitting in a drawer doesn't help anyone. But put it in a flashlight, and suddenly it pushes back the dark. God fills us with His Spirit so the light of Jesus can shine out of us to other people.
Memorizing this verse is more than a brain exercise. It loads truth right where you'll reach for it later. Maybe a friend asks, "Why do you believe in God?" Maybe you feel too shy to speak. Then these words can rise up inside you: I have received power. I get to be His witness. Watch the little map at the end too. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the end of the earth. It moves from close to far, from the people we know to the stranger. The gospel is meant to keep traveling outward, and you are part of that journey right where you are today.
Around the Table
Let's say it with motions! "Power" (flex your arms), "Holy Spirit" (point up), "witnesses" (cup your hands by your mouth like you're telling news).
Let's do it: Say the verse three times, getting a little louder each time — finish with a happy shout!
Try saying the verse and then naming the four places in order: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the end of the earth. Near to far!
Let's talk: What's the difference between just knowing about Jesus and being a witness for Him?
Memorize it until you can say it with your eyes closed. Then notice the words: "you shall receive" and "you shall be." These are promises, not maybes.
Let's go deeper: God ties the gift of power to the job of witness. What does that tell us about why He gives spiritual power in the first place?

If your phone or flashlight had no battery, what good would it be? God's Spirit is the power that makes our witness actually shine.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Some people imagine Christianity spread because powerful kings forced it. But it started with a handful of ordinary witnesses. The Spirit gave them power, and they told what they saw. It spread from one person to the next. When you share Jesus, you are doing the very thing that has carried the faith for two thousand years. And reminds us to do it with gentleness, never by force.

Repetition is not the enemy of meaning. It is how truth becomes reflex. When your child can say in their sleep, you have planted a settled conviction. They learn that power for witness is normal Christian life, not a special calling for missionaries only. Resist the temptation to treat memory work as box-checking. Slow it down. Ask what each phrase means. Let your kids hear you admit that you sometimes feel too timid to speak, and that you depend on the Spirit too. That honesty disciples them more than any flawless performance. A father who quietly relies on the Holy Spirit, and says so, raises children who expect to do the same.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You for Your promise. You give us power. You make us Your witnesses. When we feel weak or shy, remind us that the power comes from You. Help us shine for Jesus today. In Jesus' name, amen."
God's promise and God's purpose go together. He gives me power so I can point others to Jesus.
