Why Jesus Sent His Spirit
Month 9: The Spirit's Power for Witness · Why We Believe
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 14:16-18, 26
16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. … 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Memory Verse
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””— Acts 1:8 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Psalms 64-66
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 243 of 365 — "Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done.")The Heart of It
The disciples were sad. Jesus had just told them He was leaving, and they couldn't picture life without Him walking beside them. So Jesus gave them a tender promise. He said, "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever" (). The word "Helper" can also mean Comforter, Counselor, or the One who comes alongside. And notice the little word "another." Jesus promised another Helper of the same kind as Jesus Himself. The Holy Spirit isn't a lesser substitute. He is God, just as the Father and the Son are God. Jesus even said, "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you" (). Through the Spirit, Jesus would now be with every believer and even inside them.
So why did Jesus send His Spirit? We see at least three beautiful reasons right here. First, to be with us forever. Jesus' presence is no longer limited to one place at a time. By His Spirit He can be with His people all over the world at once. Second, to teach us. Jesus said the Spirit "will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you" (). That is part of why we can trust the Bible. The Spirit helped the apostles remember Jesus' words accurately. Third, to help us. He comforts us when we're afraid and gives us courage to live for Jesus. The Spirit's coming isn't a strange add-on to Christianity. It is the proof of Jesus' love keeping His promise.
Around the Table
Jesus didn't leave us alone. He sent the Holy Spirit to be our Helper who stays with us forever and never leaves!
Let's do it: Give yourself a big hug and say, "Jesus didn't leave me an orphan — His Spirit is with me!"
Jesus called the Spirit "another Helper." He meant a Helper just like Himself. The Spirit teaches us, comforts us, and reminds us of Jesus' words.
Let's talk: Which job of the Helper do you need most right now — teaching, comforting, or courage?
Jesus said the Spirit would help the apostles remember His words accurately. That is one reason we can trust the Gospels were recorded faithfully.
Let's go deeper: Some say the Bible is just men's opinions. How does Jesus' promise about the Spirit's help with memory give us confidence in what the apostles wrote?

🛡️ Defending the Faith
Someone might say, "How can you trust the Bible? People forget and exaggerate over time." You can answer kindly. "That's a fair worry. But Jesus promised His Spirit would help the apostles remember His exact words (). The Gospels were written while the eyewitnesses were still alive, and those eyewitnesses could correct mistakes. The Gospels were also copied so carefully that we can check them. So the Bible isn't a game of telephone. It is eyewitness testimony, preserved on purpose." Always share this with the gentleness and respect calls for. We are inviting a friend to look, not winning an argument.

The doctrine of the Spirit guards two things at once. It guards God's transcendence, for He reigns above all. And it guards God's nearness, for He dwells within His people. "Another Helper of the same kind as Me" is a quiet but mighty claim to the deity of the Spirit. It is the same truth the church later confessed at Nicaea and Constantinople. For your kids, this matters practically. The Spirit is not an impersonal force to be "used." He is a Person to be known, grieved, obeyed, and loved. Teach them to talk to the Spirit, not just about Him. And let anchor their confidence in Scripture. The same Spirit who superintended the writing of the Word still illuminates it when we read. A father who treasures the Bible and prays for the Spirit's help while reading it models a faith both reasonable and alive.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that You didn't leave us alone. You sent the Holy Spirit to be our Helper forever. Teach us what is true. Comfort us when we're afraid. Remind us of Jesus' words. Help us trust Your Word with all our hearts. In Jesus' name, amen."
Jesus kept His promise. His Spirit is with me to teach, comfort, and stay forever.
