Working When No One Watches

Month 11: Living It Out · Heart Matters

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Colossians 3:22

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only to please them while they are watching, but with sincerity of heart and fear of the Lord.

Memory Verse

Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, as for the Lord and not for men, because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.Colossians 3:23-24 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 13-16

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 311 of 365 — Jeremiah finds God's words and eats them: "Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.")

The Heart of It

Paul gives us a phrase today that gets right to the heart. Do your work "not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God" (v. 22). "Eyeservice" is a great word. It means working hard only when eyes are on you, then slacking off the second the boss turns around. We've all felt that pull. You make your bed nicely when Mom is in the doorway, then shove everything under the covers when she's gone. You practice carefully at the lesson, then barely try at home. The problem isn't really about the bed or the piano. It's about the heart. Eyeservice means our heart is trying to impress people instead of honoring God.

Jesus wants something deeper than a good show. He wants "sincerity of heart." That means being the same person whether or not anyone is watching, because we know God always is. This is one of the most important things you can learn while you're young. The kid who does honest, careful work in private grows into an adult people can truly trust. And here's the wonderful part. God sees every hidden effort and never misses one. You don't have to perform for an audience. You already have the only Audience who matters, and He is delighted when your heart is real. Working well in secret is how a strong, honest character is quietly built, one unseen choice at a time.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

"Eyeservice" means only being good when someone is watching. But God sees us ALL the time — even when we're alone — and He loves a real, honest heart.

Let's do it: Play "freeze!" Close your eyes, then peek. Talk about how God never has to peek — He always sees, and that's a good thing!

Middles 9–11

Working "in sincerity of heart" means being the same whether or not a grownup is in the room. That's what makes a person trustworthy.

Let's talk: Where are you tempted to do "eyeservice" — to try hard only when someone's watching?

Older 12–15

Integrity is who you are when no one is looking. "Eyeservice" is performance; "sincerity of heart" is character.

Let's go deeper: How does remembering that "God sees" turn a private moment into a chance to build (or break) your character?

Have you ever found out someone was watching you when you thought you were alone? How did that feel?God is always with us — not to catch us, but because He cares about a real heart.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

A watching world quickly spots the difference between people who act good and people who are good. When a Christian works honestly even with no one around, it shows that faith reaches all the way down to the heart, not just the surface. That kind of quiet honesty makes the gospel believable. It's exactly the "good conscience" Peter ties to our witness ().

For Dad · Go Deeper

"Eyeservice" is the original word for hypocrisy at work, and kids have radar for it. They notice when Dad drives carefully only near police, returns extra change only when the cashier is looking, or cleans up his language only at church. calls us instead to "sincerity of heart, fearing God." That is a healthy, loving awe that God's eyes are always present. This isn't about anxious self-watching. It's about resting in the truth that you are never performing for an empty room. The most formative integrity your children will inherit is the kind they cannot see. The honesty of your private life. Your unseen prayers. Your refusal to cut corners no one would catch. Ask yourself tonight. Am I the same man in the dark as in the light? Your kids are becoming the answer to that question.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, You see us all the time, even when no one else does. Make our hearts sincere, so we work honestly whether or not anyone is watching. We want to please You more than people. Build real character in us, one hidden choice at a time. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Who I am when no one is watching is who I really am. And God is always watching with love.
