Praying for Fellow Soldiers

Month 12: Sent & Standing Firm · Loving Others

⏱ ≈ 12 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Ephesians 6:18-20

18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will boldly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it fearlessly, as I should.

Memory Verse

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.Ephesians 6:10 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Daniel 7-9

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 343 of 365 — Daniel prays a humble prayer for his whole people, and God sends an answer.)

The Heart of It

After describing all that armor, Paul says something easy to miss. He asks them to pray for all the saints, and for him too. Did you notice he doesn't say, "Pray for me to be comfortable"? Paul was in chains in prison. And his prayer request was that he'd be given the right words to "make known the mystery of the gospel" boldly. Standing firm was never meant to be a one-soldier job. God's people are an army, and soldiers don't fight alone. They cover each other. The Christian who tries to follow Jesus all by herself is like a soldier who wanders off from the group. She gets tired and surrounded fast. We're stronger together. And one of the strongest things you can do for another believer is pray for them.

Here's the beautiful part. Praying for your fellow soldiers is one of the deepest ways we love others. You may not be able to fix your friend's hard day. You can't heal a sick grandparent. You can't stand beside a missionary across the ocean. But you can pray, and God hears every word. When you pray for someone, you're asking the King of the universe to help them stand firm. That's not a small thing. It's like holding up someone's tired arms (). A family that prays for others is a family fighting for people, not against them. Who are the tired soldiers around you who need their arms held up today?

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

We can help people even when we can't be right next to them. We pray for them! God always hears.

Let's do it: Name one person who needs help, then pray for them right now in one sentence.

Middles 9–11

Paul asked others to pray for him to be bold, not just safe. Praying is a real way to love and fight for people.

Let's talk: Who is one "fellow soldier" your family could pray for this week? Maybe a friend, a missionary, or a church leader.

Older 12–15

Paul was in chains, but he asked for boldness to share the gospel rather than for release. Praying for others lets you fight alongside people you'll never stand beside in person.

Let's go deeper: If you took praying for others as seriously as Paul did, who would land on your daily prayer list, and why?

💬 Conversation Starter

If a friend was running a long, hard race and getting tired, what could you do to help them keep going? Praying for someone is like cheering and carrying them at the same time.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Someone might say, "Praying for people is useless. It doesn't actually do anything." We can kindly answer that prayer isn't us sending good vibes into the air. It's talking to a real, living God who acts. The God who made the universe invites us to bring real needs to Him. And the Bible is full of prayers He answered (; ).

For Dad · Go Deeper

Notice the trajectory of . It doesn't end with me standing firm in my armor. It ends with us, praying "for all the saints" and for the spread of the gospel. Individualism is one of the quiet enemies of a child's faith. A kid who thinks Christianity is a private, solo project will fold the moment he feels alone. So teach your children early that they belong to an army, a body, a family of believers worldwide. And teach them that we hold each other up. Make praying for others normal in your home. Pray by name for missionaries, persecuted believers, your church's leaders, the lost neighbor. When your kids watch Dad regularly carry other people to God in prayer, they learn that the strong life in Christ is never a self-focused life. We stand firm together.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You that we're not fighting alone. Help our family hold up the tired arms of others in prayer. Give boldness to everyone sharing the good news. Help us love people by bringing them to You. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

One of the strongest ways I can love someone is to pray for them.
