Putting On the Whole Armor

Month 12: Sent & Standing Firm · Family Worship

⏱ ≈ 15 min together

Today's Scripture

Read together: Ephesians 6:14-17

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Memory Verse

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.Ephesians 6:10 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Daniel 10-12

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 344 of 365 — Daniel sees that behind the scenes God is fighting for His people and will surely win.)

The Heart of It

Today the whole family gets dressed for the day in God's armor. Paul lists six pieces, and each one is really a part of Jesus that He gives us. The belt of truth holds everything together. We live by what's true, not by what feels good in the moment. The breastplate of righteousness guards our heart with the right-standing Jesus gives us. The shoes of the gospel of peace keep us ready to go and share good news. The shield of faith stops the burning lies the enemy fires at us. The helmet of salvation protects our minds with the certain hope that we belong to Jesus. And the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, is the one weapon we carry forward. Put together, this isn't a costume. It's a whole way of living each day close to Jesus.

Did you notice the word whole? "Put on the whole armor of God." We don't get to pick our two favorite pieces and skip the rest. A soldier with a shield but no helmet has a gap the enemy will find. So does a soldier with a sword but no breastplate. The same is true for us. We need truth and righteousness and faith and the Word. We need all of it, every day. The good news is that this armor isn't something we make ourselves. It's Christ Himself, and the Holy Spirit helps us "put Him on" (). As a family, when we wake up, we can pray our way into each piece. Then we walk out the door dressed for whatever the day brings.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

God gives us special armor for our hearts! Let's "put it on" together so we're ready to follow Jesus all day.

Let's do it: Act it out! Buckle the belt. Tap your chest for the breastplate. Stomp your gospel shoes. Hold up your shield. Put on your helmet. Swing your sword. Cheer when you're "dressed"!

Middles 9–11

Each piece of armor is a part of Jesus that protects us. Truth, right-standing, peace, faith, salvation, and God's Word.

Let's talk: Which piece of armor do you most need this week, and why? Pick one and pray for it together.

Older 12–15

Paul's six pieces each point to a gospel reality. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word. Putting on the "whole" armor is really putting on Christ Himself, every day.

Let's go deeper: Where's the "gap" in your armor right now? Is there a piece you tend to leave off? What's one habit that would help you put it on every morning?

If your family were a team of knights, what would your team name and shield design be? God's real armor is even better. It protects your heart, not just your body!

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Someone might say, "Religion is just a crutch for people who can't handle real life." We can gently answer that following Jesus is more like armor than a crutch. It doesn't help us hide from real life. It equips us to face it with truth, courage, and hope. People without armor aren't braver. They're just unprotected (; ).

For Dad · Go Deeper

Make this practical, Dad. Turn it into a family rhythm. Some households "put on the armor" out loud as a morning prayer. They name each piece and ask God for what it represents before the day scatters everyone to school and work. It's a wonderful way to begin, but watch the trap. The armor is not a magic ritual or a lucky charm. Each piece is Christ Himself. Truth is Jesus. Righteousness is Jesus. Peace is Jesus. Salvation is Jesus. So the goal isn't a memorized list. It's a family clinging to a Person. As you lead this worship time, keep pointing past the metaphor to the Savior who is our armor. And remember your own influence. Kids learn to "suit up" daily from a father who visibly depends on Christ, not from one who merely teaches a checklist.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, today we put on Your whole armor. We take Your truth, Your righteousness, and Your peace. We take faith, salvation, and Your Word. Cover our family from head to toe in Jesus. Help us stand firm and walk close to You all day. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

Every piece of God's armor is really Jesus. So I put on the whole of Him, every day.
