Today's reading: Zechariah 5-8
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Near Day 362 of 365 — God promises to dwell again with His people in faithfulness.)The Heart of It
Paul had just spent a whole chapter proving something amazing. Jesus really, truly rose from the dead. He rose bodily, in real history, seen by hundreds of witnesses. Then Paul lands the plane. He writes, "Therefore... be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." Did you catch the word therefore? Because the resurrection is real, nothing you do for Jesus is ever wasted. Storms will come. Hard questions will come. Friends may walk away from God. There will be mockers, your own doubts, and plain old tiredness. But a tree with deep roots doesn't fall in the wind. A disciple anchored to the risen Jesus can be "immovable."
"Steadfast" means staying put when everything pushes you to move. "Immovable" means you don't get knocked off the truth. But notice that standing firm isn't standing still. Paul says keep "always abounding in the work of the Lord." Firmness isn't sitting on the couch refusing to budge. It's keeping on loving, serving, praying, and sharing Jesus even when it's hard. You can do that because you know your labor matters forever. You don't just hope it does. You know it. The empty tomb means the storms don't get the last word. Jesus does.
Around the Table
A tree with deep roots doesn't blow over in the wind. When we hold tight to Jesus, we can stand strong too!
Let's do it: Pretend to be trees in a big storm. Sway your arms, but keep your feet planted. Say, "We won't fall, because we hold on to Jesus!"
"Steadfast" means staying strong even when it's hard. Jesus rose from the dead, so nothing we do for Him is wasted.
Let's talk: What's one hard thing, like a storm, that might try to knock you off following Jesus?
Paul grounds standing firm in the resurrection. Your firmness rests on a fact, not a feeling.
Let's go deeper: When doubts or mockery hit, how does the evidence for Jesus' resurrection help you stay immovable?

What helps a building stay standing in an earthquake? How is that like staying strong in our faith?
🛡️ Defending the Faith
Someone may ask, "How can you be so sure about Jesus?" Point them to the resurrection. Point to the empty tomb. Point to the eyewitnesses, and the disciples who died rather than deny it. That happened in real history. So your faith stands on solid ground, not on wishful thinking. We hold it firmly, and we share it gently ().

Notice Paul's logic, because it's the backbone of Christian confidence. Because the resurrection is true (vv. 1-57), therefore be immovable (v. 58). Christianity is a faith built on a historical claim that can be investigated. That's a gift to give your children. Many kids drift away, and not because they're rebellious. They drift because no one ever showed them the faith has reasons. By the standards historians actually use, the resurrection is the best-attested event of the ancient world. It has early testimony and multiple sources. It has embarrassing details no one would invent, and witnesses willing to die for what they claimed. When your kids know the tomb is empty, their feet stop sliding. Your job in the coming year is to keep the resurrection vivid and defensible at your table. Then when the storms come, and they will, your children are steadfast, immovable, and unwasted.

Let's Pray Together
"Father, thank You that Jesus really rose from the dead, so nothing we do for You is ever wasted. Make us steadfast and immovable when storms come. Help us keep serving and sharing You, no matter what. In Jesus' name, amen."
Because Jesus rose, I can stand firm. Nothing I do for Him is ever wasted.
