Kind Answers About Evolution
Month 3: Creation & Science · Loving Others
Today's Scripture
Read together: 1 Peter 3:15 & Colossians 4:6
15 But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect, — 1 Peter 3:15
6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. — Colossians 4:6
Memory Verse
“For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.”— Exodus 20:11 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Jude 1
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Jude urges us to "contend for the faith" — and to be merciful to those who doubt.)The Heart of It
Sooner or later, a friend or a teacher or a video will tell you something like this. "We all came from animals. Humans evolved over millions of years. Nobody made us." How should a follower of Jesus answer? First, with kindness. says, "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt." And tells us to give our reason for hope "with gentleness and respect." So we never roll our eyes. We never mock. We never get angry. The person in front of us is made in God's image. God loves them deeply, even if they don't know it yet. Winning an argument but hurting a person is not a win at all.
Then, with gentle confidence, we can share what we believe and why. We don't believe living things made themselves. Everything that is made shows there was a Maker (). We notice that animals always have their own kind of babies. Dogs have puppies. Cats have kittens. That's just what Genesis says: "according to its kind." And most of all, we trust the One who was actually there. He told us He made us on purpose (). Loving others means we care more about them than about being right. We answer the question honestly. But we keep the door of friendship wide open. The goal isn't to defeat people. The goal is to point them to the Maker who loves them.
Around the Table
If a friend says nobody made us, we don't get grumpy — we smile and say, "I believe God made us, because He loves us!"
Let's do it: Practice saying it with a big, kind smile: "God made me on purpose!"
We can disagree with an idea and still be very kind to the person. Loving them matters more than winning.
Let's talk: What's the difference between proving you're right and really helping someone see the truth?
Notice the kind of tone God asks for. He says "grace, seasoned with salt." He says "gentleness and respect." You can hold a firm belief about creation and still be the kindest person in the room.
Let's go deeper: If a teacher teaches evolution as fact, how can you answer respectfully without pretending to agree and without being rude?
💬 Conversation Starter
Has anyone ever disagreed with you and still been really nice about it? How did that make you feel about them? That's how we want to be when we talk about the Maker.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
When someone says, "Humans evolved from animals. Nobody made us": Try a kind reply like this. "That's something a lot of people are taught, and I've thought about it too. But everything that's made shows there was a maker. And animals always have their own kind of babies, just like the Bible said long ago. I believe God made us on purpose, and I believe He loves you." Then keep being a good friend. Answer "with gentleness and respect" (). Be confident and warm, never combative.

Evolution is the cultural air your children breathe, so prepare them not just with facts but with posture. Sean McDowell often notes that this generation tunes out arguments delivered with arrogance, but it listens to people who are genuinely kind. Teach your kids the difference between an idea and a person. We can lovingly challenge an idea, and we always honor a person. Help them see molecules-to-man evolution for what it is: a story about the unobservable past that requires enormous faith of its own. Meanwhile, real observable science fits a Creator beautifully. Think of genetics, biology, and the fixed boundaries of "kinds." But above all, drill the tone of and into them. A child who can win every science debate but loses every friend has missed the mission. We contend for the faith, and we show mercy ().

Let's Pray Together
"Father, help us love the people who disagree with us. Give us kind words full of grace. Give us confidence in what You said. Use us to point our friends to You, the Maker who loves them. In Jesus' name, amen."
I can disagree with an idea and still love the person. Kindness opens the door that truth walks through.
