Today's Scripture

Read together: Genesis 2:1–3 & Mark 2:27

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished. — Genesis 2:1–3
27 Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. — Mark 2:27

Memory Verse

For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.Exodus 20:11 (BSB)

📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)

Today's reading: Revelation 1-4

Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (We reach the last book! John sees the risen Jesus in glory and heaven worshiping the Creator.)

The Heart of It

We close this week the way God closed creation week. We close it with rest and worship. "On the seventh day God ended His work… and He rested." Then Jesus added something beautiful in : "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath." Rest isn't a heavy rule meant to crush us. It's a gift God designed for our good. It's like a loving Father saying, "Stop. Breathe. I've got the world handled. You can rest in Me." The Creator never needed rest. Yet He still chose to rest. He did it to teach us that we were never meant to run on empty.

So today, let's worship Him together. We can thank God that He made everything in six days. We can thank Him that He made us on purpose. And we can thank Him that He gives us rest. The whole reason for the Sabbath points beyond a single day to a Person. Jesus invites all who are tired to come to Him. He says, "I will give you rest" (). When we trust the Maker, we can put down our worries about whether the world is in good hands. It is in His hands. Worship is simply our happy answer to a great Creator. It's a family lifting up praise to the One who made it all, holds it all, and loves us through it all.

Around the Table

Littles 5–8

God worked for six days and then He rested. And He gives us rest too, because He loves us! Let's thank Him together.

Let's do it: Take a big slow breath in and out, then say loudly, "Thank You, God, for rest!"

Middles 9–11

Jesus said the Sabbath was made for us. It's a gift, not a heavy rule. Rest is one of God's good ideas, and it's for our good.

Let's talk: What's one way our family can build real rest into our week so we can enjoy God's gift?

Older 12–15

Sabbath rest points all the way to Jesus. He gives rest to the weary (). Creation, the commandment, and the Savior all connect.

Let's go deeper: How does trusting that the world is in God's hands actually help you rest from worry?

What's your favorite way to rest and enjoy God after a busy week? God built rest into the very first week. It's His gift to you.

🛡️ Defending the Faith

Almost every culture in the world lives on a seven-day week. There's no reason in the stars or the sky for it. So it quietly echoes the creation week of Genesis. Where did the seven-day rhythm come from? It came from a Creator who made it so. We can mention that gently, "with gentleness and respect" (), as one more fingerprint of God.

For Dad · Go Deeper

Family worship at the end of a themed week is a chance to bring it all together. You get to lift everything you've learned about creation up to God in praise. Notice the gospel thread running through it. There's the creation Sabbath (), the command grounded in it (), Jesus' lordship over it (), and finally the soul-rest He offers (). Tony Evans reminds fathers that we are the worship leaders of our homes whether we feel qualified or not. Our children learn what God is worth largely by watching what He's worth to us. So don't merely explain rest. Practice it in front of them. Let them see you unhurried and content, trusting that the world doesn't depend on your striving. A dad at rest in his Maker preaches a sermon no lecture can match.

Let's Pray Together

"Father, thank You for making the whole world in six days. Thank You for the gift of rest. We can rest in You. The whole world is safe in Your hands. We worship You, our great Creator. In Jesus' name, amen."

Carry It With You

My Maker holds the whole world. So I can rest in Him and worship with a happy heart.
