Is the Holy Spirit Really a Person?
Month 4: Walking in the Spirit · Why We Believe
Today's Scripture
Read together: John 14:26 & John 16:13–14
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you. — John 14:26
13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you. — John 16:13–14
Memory Verse
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—”— John 14:16 (BSB)
📖 Bible-in-a-Year (optional)
Today's reading: Judges 10–12
Reading the whole Bible in a year — do this when you have extra time. (Around Day 93 of 365 — Jephthah and the tangled days of the judges.)The Heart of It
Some people imagine the Holy Spirit as a kind of electricity from God. A power you plug into. A "force" with no face. But that's not how Jesus talked about Him at all. Listen to the words Jesus used. The Spirit "will teach you all things." He will "bring to your remembrance" what Jesus said (). He "will guide you into all truth." He "will speak." He "will glorify Me" (). Forces don't teach, remember, guide, speak, or choose to honor someone else. Only a Person can do that. Jesus even calls Him "He," not "it," and He does it on purpose.
The Bible shows the Holy Spirit doing all the things a person does and feeling all the things a person feels. He has a mind. He knows the deep things of God (). He has a will. He gives gifts "to each one individually as He wills" (). He has feelings. We're told not to "grieve the Holy Spirit" (), and you can only grieve someone who can be hurt. He can be lied to (). He can be spoken to and obeyed. The Holy Spirit is not God's battery. He is God Himself, a Person you can know, love, and walk with. And He already knows and loves you.
Around the Table
The Holy Spirit isn't a thing like a light switch. He's a Someone — God who loves you and helps you!
Let's do it: Wave hello and say, "Hi, Holy Spirit — I'm glad You're a Someone, not a something!"
A force can't teach or remind or speak. But the Bible says the Spirit does all those things — so He must be a Person.
Let's talk: What's something a person can do that a flashlight or the wind could never do?
The Spirit has a mind, a will, and feelings. Those are marks of a Person, and He is fully God.
Let's go deeper: If the Spirit can be grieved, how should that change the way you treat Him this week?

What's the difference between a robot toy that talks and a real friend who talks? One is just running a program. The other actually knows and loves you. And so does the Holy Spirit.
🛡️ Defending the Faith
When someone says, "The Holy Spirit is just God's power or a force, not a person" you can answer kindly and confidently: "I understand why it sounds that way, but Jesus didn't describe a force. He said the Spirit teaches, reminds, guides, speaks, and even decides (; 16:13). The Bible says He has a mind, a will, and feelings. You can even grieve Him (). A force can't be hurt or make choices. Only a person can. So the Spirit is a Person. And He's God." (Anchor: . Give the reason for your hope "with gentleness and respect." We're not trying to win an argument. We're sharing truth.)
For Dad · Go Deeper
This matters more than it first appears. If your children grow up thinking of the Spirit as raw power, they'll start chasing experiences and "spiritual energy" instead of building a relationship. That's the very root error behind the hype and prosperity distortions of our day, where the Spirit becomes a means to get things rather than a Person to know. But the New Testament invites us into "the communion of the Holy Spirit" (). That means fellowship, friendship, a two-way relationship with God. Teach your kids to talk to Him, not just about Him. A right view of the Spirit's personhood is the soil where healthy, Christ-centered Pentecostal life grows. A wrong view feeds shallow excitement that fades.

Let's Pray Together
"Holy Spirit, thank You that You are a real Person. You are God. You teach us, You remind us, and You live with us. Help us to know You. Keep us close to You. And help us never to grieve You. In Jesus' name, amen."
The Holy Spirit isn't a power I use. He's a Person I get to know.
